Bulgarian Orthodox Church Formally Rejects Pan-Orthodox Council

The Bulgarian Orthodox Church’s governing body, the Holy Synod, has formally rejected the Pan-Orthodox Council and its conclusions, it emerged from an announcement in Sofia on November 29.

The Bulgarian Orthodox Church declined to attend the council, held in Crete in June, after its call for the Pan-Orthodox Council to be postponed was not heeded.

It was among four autocephalous Orthodox churches that refused to attend, along with the Patriarchate of Antioch, the Georgian Orthodox Church and the Russian Orthodox Church.

The event in Crete was “neither Great, nor Pan, nor Pan-Orthodox,” the Holy Synod said in its November 29 decision.

The decision noted that the Crete council had been attended by “representatives of the media and guests from heterodox religious groups (Roman Catholic, Anglican, etc)”.

It noted that 33 people from among the bishops who had participated in the council had not signed the document on “Relations of the Orthodox Church with the rest of the Christian world”. Some of the bishops who had not signed included prominent Orthodox theologians, the Bulgarian church’s document said.

Bulgaria’s Holy Synod said that it had examined the documents from Crete after specialist translation by an authorised translator.

It said that it had noted that, in part, the documents that had been circulated before the Crete meeting had undergone some changes “but insignificant and insufficient” for ecumenical acceptance.

The Bulgarian church, in brief, rejected the notion of recovering the unity of Christianity because – it emerged from the documentation – the Orthodox church had never split.

I guess it depends on WHICH of the thousands of protestant denominations (worldwide) you are speaking to/of.

I haven't heard a PEEP from them. This site seems to be rather specific, doesn't it?

Lol. I often wonder how much usage the other forums get.
The three topics that are NEVER to be discussed at a family/friends get-together: sex, politics and religion. :o)

We discuss politics and religion to the nth degree.

no, I understand that . But why is it always Catholic doctrine. I am a protestant, one of 175 million in this country. There is no protestant voice here. I am not into protestant proliferation . I am a politics guy but over and over I see here Catholic proliferation. I am not the one— but is there not anyone in all the guitar playing , money collecting, professional Christian community willing to promote Wesleyan Protestantism on this wonderful site? We need a Protestant CAUCAS!!

Start one.

I'm Catholic so I post mainly Catholic/Orthodox news apart from the occasional story about religious freedom and the "culture wars" which affect Christians right across the spectrum.

This is not meant as a slight against Protestantism. I just figure that Protestants can post their own news.

There IS no Protestant ONENESS to promote ONE doctrine. THAT is the bailiwick of the Catholic Church. It has been around 1500+ years with that ONE doctrine with no one gainsaying them.
Defrocked and disgraced Catholic priest Father Martin Luther was the first of the breakaway minds. [I often wonder if he regretted what he did.] Once the "dam had broken" on separating from the 1500+ year old Catholic Church, others decided that they too could interpret the Bible however THEY wanted. Much of it, at the beginning of the movement, was simply anti-Catholic. It sure isn't that now.

YES, you need a Protestant CAUCAS!
