Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem
The Book of Psalms
(Psalm 38)
Psalm 38[a]
A psalm of David. A petition.
1 Lord, do not rebuke me in your anger
or discipline me in your wrath.
2 Your arrows have pierced me,
and your hand has come down on me.
3 Because of your wrath there is no health in my body;
there is no soundness in my bones because of my sin.
4 My guilt has overwhelmed me
like a burden too heavy to bear.
5 My wounds fester and are loathsome
because of my sinful folly.
6 I am bowed down and brought very low;
all day long I go about mourning.
7 My back is filled with searing pain;
there is no health in my body.
8 I am feeble and utterly crushed;
I groan in anguish of heart.
9 All my longings lie open before you, Lord;
my sighing is not hidden from you.
10 My heart pounds, my strength fails me;
even the light has gone from my eyes.
11 My friends and companions avoid me because of my wounds;
my neighbors stay far away.
12 Those who want to kill me set their traps,
those who would harm me talk of my ruin;
all day long they scheme and lie.
13 I am like the deaf, who cannot hear,
like the mute, who cannot speak;
14 I have become like one who does not hear,
whose mouth can offer no reply.
15 Lord, I wait for you;
you will answer, Lord my God.
16 For I said, Do not let them gloat
or exalt themselves over me when my feet slip.
17 For I am about to fall,
and my pain is ever with me.
18 I confess my iniquity;
I am troubled by my sin.
19 Many have become my enemies without cause[b];
those who hate me without reason are numerous.
20 Those who repay my good with evil
lodge accusations against me,
though I seek only to do what is good.
21 Lord, do not forsake me;
do not be far from me, my God.
22 Come quickly to help me,
my Lord and my Savior.

There is a lot of misunderstanding surrounding the medical term "psychosomatic".
Derived from the Greek words for "mind (or SOUL)" and "body" the Internet definition is this:
adj. Of or relating to a disorder having physical symptoms but originating from mental or emotional causes.
Unfortunately, many people think their symptoms are being dismissed as being "all in your head", and that psychosomatic illnesses are not real. The sad fact is that the symptoms are very real, and that there is a direct connection between the inner life and that which we can see and feel.
David gives a graphic description of the somatic effects of unconfessed sin upon the body. There is no doubt that for David, the symptoms are REAL and he also has no doubt about their origin. David preceded Freud by almost 3000 years, but he already had it figured out.
Whether confession is to the Lord in prayer, to a Brother or Sister in The Lord, to a congregation, at an AA meeting, or in the context of a sacrament, "confession" is the act of AGREEING with God that "sin is sin". The whole shift of the past half-century has been, not excusing sin, but saying that "sin ISN'T sin", and thus, disagreeing with the Creator of the Universe, Who has "written the Law upon our hearts."(Romans 1). Since they will not agree with the Creator of their bodies, their bodies rebel. Sure, there are microbes and diseases and other dangers in the world, and we are all mortal and prey to them, but "psychosomatic illness", brought about by anxiety, guilt, and shame are very real as well.

Dear Sister, thank you for your time and heart on these posts. This one touches home, along with this portion of scripture that spoke to me as the effects of anorexia/bulemia had a grip on me for many years:
Ps. 117
17Some were fools; they rebelled
and suffered for their sins.
18They couldnt stand the thought of food,
and they were knocking on deaths door.
19Lord, help! they cried in their trouble,
and he saved them from their distress.
20He sent out his word and healed them,
snatching them from the door of death.
21Let them praise the Lord for his great love
and for the wonderful things he has done for them.
22Let them offer sacrifices of thanksgiving
and sing joyfully about his glorious acts.
Praising God for sending me THE WORD OF LIFE, my LORD and SAVIOR, and snatched me from that pit. Praying for the Peace of Jerusalem, for our families, our children, our children’s children, our nations.

Thank you for sharing that wonderful testimony. I will never see Psalm 117 the same again, after hearing how it was so relevantly applied, currently and dramatically in your life!

I just realized I had a typo in posting the verses that touched me...they were from Ps. 107. But indeed, Psalm 117 is still so very appropriate. :)
