I was taught if you forgive someone, the burden of their sin is taken off your shoulders and piled on the shoulders of the perpetrator. It is, in a way, a damnation. You become a freed witness, not a bound victim anymore. I probably didn’t say it the right way, but that’s the gist of it.

When you forgive you give up your claim to retaliation and put the person in God's hands.

Then God can deal with the person as HE sees fit.

Forgiveness is healing for the person forgiving and look at the testimony it is to the world.

People will be saved as a result of that testimony.
