Fears of Islamic terrorism permeate Russian history. In the nineteenth century, Russian novelists wrote books about Russian officers fighting Islamic warriors in the Caucasus (such as Hadji Murat by Lev Tolstoy). The Russian soldier fights the Islamic warrior, the one struggling to protect the Christian civilization, the other determined to eradicate it.
Now Russia has quickly replaced the United States as the number one enemy of Al Qaeda, the Islamic State and other Sunni jihadist groups motivated by the violent and puritan salafist ideology. Recent Middle Eastern Russian interventions, including those in Syria and Libya, have raised Russia to the status of the main target of the Jihadists. Everywhere it has intervened abroad, Russia seems to have been always moved by a deep fear of Islam. Putin said to CBS Charlie Rose that the most important reason why Russia came to war in Syria was the threat of their return. They are the 7,000 Russian Muslims who fought for the Caliphate.
Some Russian experts, including Alexei Malashenko of the Moscow Carnegie Center and Roman Silantiev of the Ministry of Justice, estimate that there are thousands of Salafist prayer groups in Russia nowadays, with Islam spreading practically in all regions of Russia, including Siberia and even in the Far East. Russia has also an internal demographic fear. A recent report by the Jamestown Foundation entitled How Islam Will Change Russia explained this challenge very well: given the demographic changes, Muslims will represent from one-third to half of the Russian population by 2050.
In addition to adventurism in Muslim countries, Russian forces have embarked on a massive counter-insurgency campaign against Islamic militants in its own soil. The jihadists were responsible for major attacks on Russian soil, including the hostage crisis at Moscows theater in 2002, the siege in Beslan in 2004, the............

Lol.Like Stalin before him.
Russia is the least Christian country I have visited in Eastern Europe. By far.
And the USA’s progressive, globalist, interventionist elites claim to be defenders of Islam.
My, how things have changed in a few decades.
Pope F is doing a poor job too.
That’s why Putin is presiding over an unprecedented flooding of Russia by mislim immigrants, both legal and illegal, from Central Asia and the Caucuses. Especially Moscow, which is about 50% muslim now, who say that not Moscovites have built Moscow, but Allah.

I stuttered.
“Putins Russia Claims the Role of Defender of Christians Under Islam”
I fail to see why this is funny because the sad fact is that since no one else wants the job then Russia owns it by default.
Imperial Russia did the same!
Actually, the 2012 religious statistics of Moscow give the total percentage of Muslims in the city as being about 4% Russian Orthodoxy was 53% Other Orthodoxy was 2%, Old Believers 1%, pagans 1%,, Protestants <1%, Deists 19%, and Atheists 12%

That’s your opinion. From what I have witnessed,Russian Christians are more devout than most Americans, by far.

That is most likely based on the old Soviet style resident registry system that Russia still uses. Others estimate those not officially registered and that figure is 2 million or more Muslims living in Moscow.
A Remembrance From Days Gone ByThe Ballad Of
Abdul ABul Bul Amir & Ivan Skavinsky SkavarSeem The Hate Between Russia And The Muzzies Do Go Way Back
We used to sing this when I was a kid and I had no idea of the meaning back in those days
Today, it’s 2 mln out of 12 mln. Official statistics. Unofficially, many more.
More believable for Putin to say it than if Obama (”I’m Christian, I went to Jeremiah Wright’s church for 20 years”) had claimed to be a defender of the Christian faith.
Shhhhh. Don’t let on otherwise the putinista crowd will be upset
It’s funny because if you think that is why Putin continues his expansionist policies you are highly misinformed
If you think you can read my mind you’re deluded.
I don’t have to read your mind. I read your post
