Cardinal Marx Says Anti-Gay Discrimination, not Same-Sex Marriage, is Defeat for Church
La Croix ^ | 6/17/17 | Christa Pongratz-Lippitt

He understands the fears of some conservative Catholics that same-sex marriage could open the floodgates for marriages “á trois” or for incest. But he says such fears are baseless.

Cardinal Reinhard Marx of Munich has distanced himself from the apocalyptic scenarios some Catholics have voiced over Germany’s new same-sex marriage law, saying the Church should be more concerned over its historic complicity in demonizing gay people.

Marx, who is head of the German bishops’ conference and one of Pope Francis’ chief advisors and allies, stated clearly that he firmly upholds the Church’s view on marriage. But in a lengthy interview published on July 14th, he said the Church must also express its regret that it did nothing historically to oppose the prosecution of homosexuals.

He told the Augsburger Allgemeine that Church must continue to state its teaching that marriage is a lifelong bond between a man and a woman. But at the same, he said it’s also imperative “to recall that the Church has not exactly been a trailblazer as far as the rights of homosexuals are concerned”.

“We must express our regret that we did nothing to oppose homosexuals from being prosecuted,” said the 63-year-old Marx.

“The law (which made homosexuality a crime) was not rescinded until 1994 (in Germany) and we, as a Church, did not concern ourselves with it," he confessed.

The cardinal said he did not see the June 30th vote in the Bundestag that legalized same-sex marriage in Germany as a defeat for the Church because the concept of marriage and the family was not just a church matter.

“The Christian position is one thing. It’s another thing to ask if I can make all the Christian moral concepts (state) laws,” he said.

“Whoever fails to understand that the one does not automatically lead to........

If I were Catholic I would be looking into either the Eastern Orthodox church or Lutheran Church Missouri Synod. The Roman Catholic church has strayed into darkness.

I don’t go to church to worship the hierarchy. It’s not their church; they’re merely the custodians, the hired help put in charge until the Boss comes back. Bishops’ skulls have been paving the streets of hell for a long time.

There must be money in all of this is a common criticism from those who are critical of religion from the Left, perhaps those on the Right should be critical along those lines.

I am a libertarian on sexuality but I expect religious institutions to be faithful to traditional beliefs.

I also share a belief based on my experiences in heterosexuality in the context of marriage.

Can’t we all just live and let live.

Why all this obsession with not offending people from a religious leader?

Powerful well financed forces with banking and business ties seem to be pushing LGBTQ agendas with hostility towards religion.

Are they putting money into the church’s hands in exchange for these comments?

There is hatred of religion out there inconsistent with the US Constitution’s First Amendment.

Nope. Good cannot coexist with evil. One or the other will dominate; if good is dominant, then the society will live, and history always shows what happens to societies when evil dominates. That’s why Founding Fathers such as Washington, Adams and others emphasized religion and morality, especially private morality; it cannot coexist with public immorality.

The Catholic Church has ceased to exist. Might as well join the unitarians.

Christians in general need to be more aware that homosexuality is demonic in origin and in NOT something you tolerate.

Every congregation that even considers homosexual “marraige” should be hammered with Romans 1:18-32.

A good point, but you have to consider the effect that this will have on people not as well formed (for lack of a better term) as yourself.

For instance, most of my bride’s family are now pro gay because “the bishop said we should be”.

At some point, you have to realize what side you are on. I saw the same response from those in the ELCA twenty five years ago. Right until their daughter came home, announced she had an abortion and that the pastoress said it was God’s will.
