There is an ongoing problem with British tourists doing things like this all over the world. I can’t tell you how many times I have been to a country where the local people told me about something like this British tourists did recently and how outraged they were. Many people in countries around the would like to ban them.

Americans have a good reputation as tourists. Part of that is relatively few, mostly wealthy and well educated Americans travel much.

About six months ago, there was an article on all the various ex-pat groups in Japan. The top three (Chinese, Korean, Filipino) all have crime rates higher than the native Japanese. The lowest and fourth largest group in numbers— Americans.

Also, when Americans of more modest backgrounds travel, they see it as a big deal, something they had to work hard to pay for, and they are not inclined to engage in shenanigans.

I am still stunned that this ghastly story involved several generations of two middle class families at a WEDDING.
