Psalm 23

Psalm 23

A psalm of David.

1 The Lord is my shepherd, I lack nothing.
2     He makes me lie down in green pastures,
he leads me beside quiet waters,
3     he refreshes my soul.
He guides me along the right paths
    for his name’s sake.
4 Even though I walk
    through the darkest valley,[a]
I will fear no evil,
    for you are with me;
your rod and your staff,
    they comfort me.

5 You prepare a table before me
    in the presence of my enemies.
You anoint my head with oil;
    my cup overflows.

6 Surely your goodness and love will follow me
    all the days of my life,
and I will dwell in the house of the Lord
    forever.

Psalm 23

The Concept of "The Good Shepherd" is not confined to this Wonderful Psalm. The Prophets speak of God as Our Shepherd, and there are some very strong passages that condemn human leaders who oppress and "fleece" the People of God. The Scriptures pronounce "WOE UNTO" bad shepherds. A GOOD Shepherd LEADS His Sheep, and they follow willingly. A BAD shepherd DRIVES the sheep from behind.

Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

Oh YHVH Rohi, Our God and Our King,
You are the tender Shepherd Who Leads us ...
You do not Drive us from behind.
You bring us to green fields of Abundance,
And refresh us With clear, cool water.
We ask You To Restore the Soul of America
And lead Us in paths of Righteousness for Your Name's sake.
And even though we face recession, distrust, polarization, and despair
And find we are wandering further into the Valley of Death,
We Know that you are With us.
We gladly accept the discipline of Your Rod,
Because we know that the Leadership and Authority of your Staff Will indeed lead us home to safety.
Our enemies surround us, But You identify them and anoint us to stand tall.
We Know You are with us, and Will be forever, in this world and the next.

May the Leaders of Our Own Beloved USA
Receive Wisdom from You
to do the Right Thing.

We Pray For The Swift and Sure Coming of Messiah,
Blessed Be He,
To Establish His Kingdom,

Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

When my husband died, my brothers and sisters came to Florida to attend his funeral. I asked my brother to read Psalm 23, using my husband's New American Standard Bible. Tom took the Bible up to the podium, and once he was up there, realized that he had left his reading glasses back in Massachusetts.

As he started the reading, I knew right away that it was the King James Version of Psalm 23 that was coming from my brother's lips, even though it was a NASB Version on the lectern. How did my brother know the KJV so perfectly that he was able to recite it as if he were doing a reading? He wasn't a particularly religious man.

Then it dawned on me. Tom and I were only a year apart in age and had attended the same elementary school.

He must have had Miss Marcus for second grade, just like me!

Psalm 23 is more than just a beautiful song (In ANY Translation!). It tells of a very special relationship between God and His People. It is different than that of the pagan world. Sheep do not spend their lives trying to "appease" an angry shepherd! Nor are they like cattle, who must be driven to market from behind by cowboys. A Good Shepherd knows His sheep by name, and cares for them. A hired hand does not act in the same way. Jesus uses this analogy to great effect in the Book of John.

They are Orthodox and Catholic, Protestant and Evangelical, Coptic, Pentecostal, and Baptist. To the persecutors, we are all "Nazarenes."
