In the formative days when some of the future beatles members were playing in Hamburg they made extra bucks mugging sailors. Lennon ain't the saint we are told he was.

Despite the granny glasses of his late '60s - early '70s phase, my understanding is that Lennon grew up poor in a working class environment, got into more than his share of fights growing up, and worked in some rough nightclubs in Germany with the early versions of the Beatles - his bandmate Stuart Sutcliffe died of a brain hemorrhage a few days after he, Lennon and Pete Best had reportedly gotten into a brawl in a club in Hamburg.
