It’s a great mystery. Pope Benedict would never have surrendered to protect himself. He must have done it for the good of the Church, although I still don’t understand why. But evidently they threatened to do something even worse if he didn’t resign.
But then he refused to step down as they expected, but remained Pope Emeritus.
Let us pray that God will straighten this out.
