“Unbroken string” ?! 2 popes? With 2 in between? No mention of Pius XII, a holy man who saved thousands of Jews and during WWII! What about Benedict XV, isn’t his cause opened? Throughout history saints are made in uneven bunches because, yes you are right, the living pope must select not only by “miracles” but what benefits the Church at that time.
