MAIDUGURI, Nigeria -- Nigeria's Boko Haram extremists attacked two villages on the outskirts of the northeastern city of Maiduguri late Sunday, killing at least 15 people, the military said Monday. The militants tried to enter the center of Maiduguri, the provincial capital of Borno state, but army soldiers repelled them, gunning down six armed insurgents and seven suicide bombers, said army spokesman Col. Onyema Nwachukwu.

At least 83 people were injured and are receiving medical attention, he said.

Residents of Maiduguri retreated to their homes Sunday night during hours-long battle marked by thunderous explosions and gunfire heard until the early hours of Monday.

Troops prevented the insurgents from entering the center of Maiduguri, but they detonated their bombs in the outlying villages of Bille Shuwa and Alikaranti, with one soldier among the 15 casualties, said Nwachukwu.

If each Western nation volunteered 100 soldiers and some light equipment, these aholes would be a bad memory in a month.

Here’s something that the US, Russia and China could do together.

Or, we could give our street gangs something worthwhile to do for a summer job.

There are approximately 186,000,000 people in nigeria. Surely, a country with 186,000,000 people can find several thousand to train and arm so as to eliminate these murdering losers. Why should other countries do anything and waste the lives of their citizens? Nigeria...heal your self. It is your crappy country.

I'll give my opinion of our intervention in Nigeria in the post below, but as to your point of nigeria heal yourself -- its not possible. Nigeria, like every other Sub-saharan state except for Botswana has no identity as a country

The south is completely different from the north and they don't really consider themselves the same country. It's like clubbing all of North America together.

If we drew a line from the southern borders of Morroco-mauritania-Algeria-Ethiopia-Somalia and create some kind of giant Bantu-stan federation it might work. The "problem" is that sub-Saharan Africa in 1800 was at the level most of Europe was in 200 BC - i.e. tribal (one step up from clans). They hadn't glued together different tribes into a nation yet.

And that hasn't happened anywhere except Botswana

This isn't purely due to colonialism. Colonialism put the different tribes into artificial countries but there is no guarantee that in the absence of colonialisation, the creation of nations would have happened at all. And it's been 50 years since colonization so its the locals fault now

I increasingly think a sub-saharan african federation is the right way forward. They can't go through the way Eurasian nations created themselves either through prestige or warfare (remember that England is the resulf of wars of conquest and that's true for nations from China to Tamil Nadu to Ireland) so the only hope is for economic means to force a nation state.

Botswana is the exception as they are more or less one nation and have assimilated others into the nations of Tswana

And, if the British had let the Dutch Boer free states be, then they would have been viable ethnic states too (or if they had split South Africa in the 80s and pushed all Zulu, Xhosa etc. to the north-east and created purely Afrikaaner (Boer, English and "coloured") state around cape-town

Other nations need to "do" something in Nigeria because failed states come back to bite everyone else -- look at Afghanistan in the 90s or Somalia or Yemen

Containment

I like the idea of sending American bangbangers there, but the problem is that we could end up with another El Salvador

The problem with sending American street gangs there is that we know already what will happen -- it happened to El Salvador

As a result fo the civil wars in El Salvador many Salvadorians came to the US, formed gangs etc. and became huge prison gangs.

Then they (MS-13) were pushed back to El Salvador

And now the country has a higher mortality rate than many warzones. 40% of the population are pushed into gangs. It's like Mad max down there.

Gang bangers are brave only if they have overwhelming odds, those cowards will join Boko Haram
