Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem
The Redemption of the First Born
(Old Testament)
Leviticus 23
Offering the Firstfruits
9 The Lord said to Moses, 10 Speak to the Israelites and say to them: When you enter the land I am going to give you and you reap its harvest, bring to the priest a sheaf of the first grain you harvest. 11 He is to wave the sheaf before the Lord so it will be accepted on your behalf; the priest is to wave it on the day after the Sabbath. 12 On the day you wave the sheaf, you must sacrifice as a burnt offering to the Lord a lamb a year old without defect, 13 together with its grain offering of two-tenths of an ephah[a] of the finest flour mixed with olive oila food offering presented to the Lord, a pleasing aromaand its drink offering of a quarter of a hin[b] of wine. 14 You must not eat any bread, or roasted or new grain, until the very day you bring this offering to your God. This is to be a lasting ordinance for the generations to come, wherever you live.
(End of Scripture Passage)
We are to offer to God our "First Fruits", not the leftovers. The Feast of the FIRSTFRUITS (YOM HABIKKURIM), was celebrated on the first Sabbath after Passover, recognizing the redemption of the first-born in Egypt and recognizing God's bounty in the Promised Land.

Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem
My Late Husband, a First-Born, and the first male child in his Mother's family for over thirty years, used to joke that his parents "sold him to a cobbler when he was a baby". I had NO IDEA what he was talking about. He explained that it was because he was the First-Born. "I was a First-Born too!" I exclaimed, "But all it meant for me was I had to babysit the other five!"
Well, the answer was, of course, that my husband's family participated in the modern Jewish practice based upon the command in the Torah of Redeeming the First-Born. The Cobbler in my husband's case was named Mr. Cohen, which meant that he was a descendant of Aaron the Priest. There was a ceremony in which Mr. Cohen received a gift from my in-laws, which simulated the practice in Ancient Israel. It was a practice that I was totally ignorant of until I learned it from my husband. Then, of course, reading the Bible made it clear to me.
This practice continues in the Christian Faith with Baptisms and Baby Dedications. It is referenced throughout the Bible, most notably when Hannah dedicates her First-Born Samuel to the Temple, and The Presentation in the Temple of the Baby Jesus.
The reason for this Special Rite is in commemoration of the Tenth Plague of Egypt...the slaying of the first born of Egypt and the REDEMPTION of the first born of Israel.
And, like nearly every other family celebration, it involves a feast.

Thank you for that news bulletin, Dear FRiend. Antisemitism if rife among Liberals, and the Left seems to be in an unholy alliance with History’s number one antisemites, Islam.
If one wonders how the godless left can align themselves with fanatical religionists like Islam, or how radical feminists can align themselves with the worst abusers of woman in history, or even how Black militants can join forces with modern slave-traders, one only has to look at the one common thread that binds them together.
I don’t think I have to spell it out.

I witnessed a pidyon haben, in synagogue where I went for a full yearly cycle.
It would deepen the faith for all Christians and Jews to be so immersed in each others traditions.
God Bless You and Yours....

Indeed. As we learn more about each other, the similarities greatly out weigh the differences.

ND the LORD spake unto Moses, saying,
Speak unto the children of Israel, and say unto them, When ye be come into the land which I give unto you, and shall reap the harvest thereof, then ye shall bring a sheaf of the firstfruits of your harvest unto the priest: |
And he shall wave the sheaf before the LORD, to be accepted for you: on the morrow after the sabbath the priest shall wave it.
And ye shall offer that day when ye wave the sheaf an the lamb without blemish of the first year for a burnt offering unto the LORD.
And the meat offering thereof shall be two tenth deals of fine flour mingled with oil, an offering made by fire unto the LORD for a sweet savour: and the drink offering thereof shall be of wine, the fourth part of an hin.
And ye shall eat neither bread, nor parched corn, nor green ears, until the selfsame day that ye have brought an offering unto your God: it shall be a statute for ever throughout your generations in all your dwellings.

They are Orthodox and Catholic, Protestant and Evangelical, Coptic, Pentecostal, and Baptist. To the persecutors, we are all "Nazarenes."

Learned a few things from this post.
I knew Cohen came from priest. But not that cobbler was derived from the name. But if the shoe fits. ;)
Joining in prayer, left that other site, for the peace of Jerusalem.
