Cath. Priests to be Forced to Report Abuse Revealed in Confession Under Victorian Opposition Plan
MSN ^ | 8/14/18 | Richard Willingham

Child sexual abuse revealed in confession would have to be reported to police and could be used as evidence if the Coalition wins Victoria's state election, the Opposition's most senior Catholic MP has announced.

The Royal Commission into Institutional Response to Child Sexual Abuse last year recommended that states introduce laws to make it a criminal offence to fail to disclose abuse revealed in the confessional.

The Andrews Government has not ruled it out, but said it wanted to first examine a uniform national approach.

Nationals Leader Peter Walsh told the ABC a Coalition Victorian government would change the law to allow information given in the confessional to be used as evidence and make it an offence to conceal abuse that was revealed in the confessional.

"Most of the people in the street, people that would be standing around talking about these issues, they believe the rights of children, the protection of children, should be sacrosanct," Mr Walsh said.

"It is simple from a legislative point of view, it obviously changes hundreds of years of precedent, but if you go back to first principles that it is about the safety of children it's a no brainer, it just needs to be done."

Well, for one thing, in many confessionals the priest neither knows the penitent's name nor sees his/her face.

So how would a priest testify in court?

>>"Somebody came into my confessional, I don't know who it was, and said something about putting sexual moves on a kid, I don't know who THAT was, nor do I know when or where the offense would have happened, and no, I can't pick him out of a police line-up"<< -- is that it?

Not only that, but how would anybody know that such a crime might have been confessed, unless the penitent himself told the police? What are they going to do: wire the confessionals? Install video-audio recording devices?

And if they did that, why would anyone come in and confess anything?

As for producing information useful for prosecution, it would turn up nothing, zero.

Besides that, a bad priest who could be pressured into testifying, would be per definition an untrustworthy man who is already breaking a vow. Can such a man be trusted to relay information with scrupulous accuracy? It would be vague, and worse than hear-say.

And a really good, conscientious priest would not bow to pressure to testify at all. Priests have accepted imprisonment rather than do that. They've even been killed, like the following:

Fr. Fernando Olmedo Reguera.

Fr. Felipe Císcar Puig.

St. Mateo Correa Magallanes.

St. John Nepomucene

Priests are bound by Church law, not civil law when it comes to breaking the seal of the confessional. Once a priest breaks that seal, it’s over for him being a priest.

So that is another quote from Jesus that you do not believe.

Perhaps you should write your own Bible since you can dispute the Truth of Jesus.

Ha! That was an easy, shooting-fish-in-a-barrel kind of comment. You know very well that the Catholic Faith is not a "Sola Scriptura" thing and has many, many human-made aspects.

(As do almost all churches, although they don't acknowledge it in quite those terms. Did the Gospels tell your church to apply for a 501(c)(3)? Does your pastoral staff have a pension plan?)

We have never even claimed that all our doctrines are explicitly ipsissimi verbi to be found in the lexicons or concordances of the OT and the NT. "Trinity" anyone? "Incarnation"?

"Sola Scriptura" is not even to be found in the Bible. Somehow God forgot to include that in Scripture.

“As the Father has sent me, even so I send you. . . . Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained” (John 20:21–23).

And how was this done? They didn't line up in a confessional, list their sins, do penance, say a Hail Mary, then attend the Mass.

This is how it was done:

37Now when they heard this, they were pierced to the heart, and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, “Brethren, what shall we do?”

38Peter said to them, “Repent, and each of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins; and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. Acts 2:37-38 NASB

The means by which God forgives sins after baptism is confession: “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just, and will forgive our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness” (1 John 1:9). Minor or venial sins can be confessed directly to God, but for grave or mortal sins, which crush the spiritual life out of the soul, God has instituted a different means for obtaining forgiveness—the sacrament known popularly as confession, penance, or reconciliation.

If we confess our sins to Him....He is faithful and just and will forgive our sins and cleanse us from ALL unrighteousness.

Somehow Roman Catholics overlook the "cleanse from ALL unrighteousness" part of the New Testament.

And ALL sins are to be confessed to God as there is no NT support for the Roman Catholic "venial" or "mortal" sins.

Sure it is. The words to describe it are not. Like Trinity.

“You know very well that the Catholic Faith is not a “Sola Scriptura” thing and has many, many human-made aspects.”

Including half the doctrine God neglected to include - and the Apostles never mentioned.

It is syncretic paganism.

“Did the Gospels tell your church to apply for a 501(c)(3)? Does your pastoral staff have a pension plan?)”

Those are not doctrines. You’ve presented a category logical fallacy.

Nope. I believe what he said and meant, but not the extra meaning you read back into it.

You know very well that the Catholic Faith is not a "Sola Scriptura" thing and has many, many human-made aspects.

No truer words have been expressed on these forums....and the errors of Roman Catholicism as a result are manifest.

(As do almost all churches, although they don't acknowledge it in quite those terms. Did the Gospels tell your church to apply for a 501(c)(3)? Does your pastoral staff have a pension plan?)

And I thought Tim Staples had pitiful Roman Catholic apologetic arguments. This one of yours is laughable.

"Sola Scriptura" is not even to be found in the Bible. Somehow God forgot to include that in Scripture.

No one, except maybe Roman Catholics, have claimed those exact words are in Scripture.

However, the context of the Scriptures tell us that Scripture is the source of Truth.

Yes....and they all attest to the supremacy of Scripture over all else for the believer.

SCRIPTURE DOES NOT CHANGE.....Roman Catholic "tradition" has, does and will change.

“Confess directly to God. He alone forgives sin“

What do you make of the commission of the disciples to bind and loose, to forgive and retain sins?

Are you familiar with the words of absolution that the priest says? Please read them slowly and find out who forgives the sins in the Sacrament of Penance.

The formula of absolution used in the Latin Church expresses the essential elements of this sacrament: The Father of mercies is the source of all forgiveness. He effects the reconciliation of sinners through the Passover of his Son and the gift of his Spirit, through the prayer and ministry of the Church:

God, the Father of mercies, through the death and the resurrection of his Son has reconciled the world to himself and sent the Holy Spirit among us for the forgiveness of sins; through the ministry of the Church may God give you pardon and peace, and I absolve you from your sins in the name of the Father, and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.

“What do you make of the commission of the disciples to bind and loose, to forgive and retain sins?”

Greek tenses reveal the meaning. “What you forgive has already been forgiven in heaven.”

They were proclaiming the forgiveness in Christ’s death - the Gospel.

“in the Sacrament of Penance”

No such thing in Scripture.

“He effects the reconciliation of sinners through the Passover of his Son and the gift of his Spirit, through the prayer and ministry of the Church:”

Not in Scripture anywhere.

I note your defense of “the seal” assertion is a book written by a “priest”, a position no Apostle recognized as an office of the church, and I also note you couldn’t defend this assertion from Scripture.

Every time this story comes up I have yet to see any article or post on FR by anyone describing how this would supposedly work in practice.

I wonder if anyone will give it a shot or is it just going to be an argument about how Catholics shouldn’t have confession in the first place.
