Help coming for Michigan's hard-working Iraqi Christians

DETROIT (ChurchMilitant.com) - President Donald Trump is promising to stop the deportation of Michigan's Iraqi Catholics, who face persecution abroad.

Trump announced his decision on Thursday at the Dana factory in Warren, Michigan during his visit promoting the trade deal he signed with Canada and Mexico a day earlier. The president told Dana personnel he'd made up his mind to help Michigan's Iraqi Christians, virtually all of whom are Catholic, earlier that day while en route to Michigan for his fifth visit as president.

"We have some Chaldeans that are working here," said Trump. "And we talked about it long and hard on the flight in, and we're going to make sure that we do everything we can to keep people who have been good to this country out of harm's way."

"When I get back [to Washington] we're going to give those who need it an extension to stay in our country," he added.

Earlier in the day, Trump discussed with lawmakers efforts that had been underway to deport hundreds of Michigan Iraqi Christians. Yet Trump asked that they focus on creating an exception for those who are hard-working, have no criminal record and face persecution in their homeland should they be forced to return.

Finally, someone standing for Christians.

Once Trump finds out about an injustice, he fixes it.

And if they’re illegal? Mexicans are catholic. What about that safe zone Trump promised?

Re: “But Trump recently learned that many law-abiding Iraqi Christians, who face persecution if deported, were also being sent back to their home country.”

Way more details needed for this story!

How did they get here in the first place? And, when?

It sounds like they are “TPS” - Temporary Protected Status

“Hundreds” of law abiding Iraqis are being deported against their will?

I don't believe that.

If they are “TPS” - Trump has been aggressively helping ALL law abiding TPS immigrants to find a new immigration status to stay in the USA.

About 2 years ago, Trump put on a big PR blitz about deporting TPS immigrants, some of whom have been in the USA for decades.

Only TPS criminals are being deported - I have not read about ANY law abiding TPS immigrants who are being deported against their will.

True. Saddam used his famously authoritarian ways to keep a lid on the Shari’a extremists, whom he (rightly) saw as threats to his pragmatic personal power, and so he somewhat cultivated the Chaldeans (Catholic) and the Assyrians (Christian Church of the East). A lot of people say it wasn’t until Saddam was swept away by the US that the “lid” blew off and all hell broke loose.

Re: “Smart move, these people are a natural constituent for the President.”

We have no information to support that claim.

What we do have is two decades of polling data...

New immigrant citizens vote 80% Democrat!

Which is why Donald Trump will be the last Republican president in American history.

Disagree...We have some great people in the Republican Party. The Dems have no one.

Just pointing out an historical curiosity. Though I would allow the Chaldeans to stay. ISIS and Iranians in Iraq kill Christians.

Besides Donald Trump, name one Republican who can be elected President in 2020.

For that matter, besides Donald Trump, name one Republican who could have been elected President in 2008, 2012, or 2016.
