I wonder if it’s a greater “abuse” to receive communion standing in a rushed line instead of kneeling. As a small step, what about putting a simple prix dieu at the head of the communion line and everyone kneels to receive, either in the hand or on the tongue.
This gets away from the seemingly unresolvable controversy of hand or tongue, but instills a reverence that could evolve into better understanding of eucharist?
Is kneeling and receiving in the hand even a “thing”? Has it been done in the past (pre-COVID)? Is it happening now (with public masses resuming) anywhere? Receiving kneeling and on the tongue is strictly required in Vetus Ordo/TLM/so-called “Extraordinary form” masses. For their part, most U.S. bishops are trying to enforce reception only in the hand. Are any of the faithful attending Latin masses in the U.S. receiving kneeling but in the hand?
Why is it unresolvable? A catholic pope could lift the indult with the stroke of his pen.
