I read that Stonewall Inn was owned by a Mafia guy. Apart from being a market for alcohol, drugs, and prostitution, it provided opportunities for blackmail. Politicians and business leaders were surreptitiously photographed or filmed there doing the gay nasty.

Stonewall Inn was also a fire trap. Only one exit, the front door. Plenty of code violations.

But the mobster who owned Stonewall Inn paid a weekly bribe to the local police. So he got away with it.

Then one day, for whatever reason, he decided not to pay. So the cops raided the place.
