Where is this promise to the successors of Peter written in the Bible? I'd really like to look those verses over carefully. Thanks in advance.

Nowhere. For 300+ years the church was fine without Rome’s regulatory and financial capture of the Church. Bishoprics held each other accountable to the word of God. The Roman “Pontiff” changed that causing all to bow to his diktats

Looks like Pope Frankie has been confusing the Gospel of Lou Reed for the Gospel of Luke again and decided to take a little Walk On The Wild Side.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oG6fayQBm9w

Totally understandable and in character for this Pope.

Next up - Drag Queen Parable Hour in the Sistine Chapel.

Sister Selma Soul of the Order of The Sisters of Perpetual Indigence has come all the way from “The City By The Bay” to give a soulful read of - “Giving Thanks to Pachamama: A Glimpse Into a Pre-Inca Shamanic Ritual” .

Get there early to get the best seat in the pews with breathtaking views of the new Golden Calf exhibition in Vatican Gardens

When in Rome, Sister Selma has been working to bring another Bay Area tradition of the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence to the Vatican - it's beloved, world famous annual Easter event - The Hunky Jesus and Foxy Mary Pageant.

While Pope Francis confirmed that he was assigning his most intimate Cardinals to lead the event planning to insure it becomes the inspirational and inclusive success it could and should be, he regretfully informed the press that he must turn down the Sisters request that he be Master of Ceremonies for the pageant.

Pope Francis gave his most heartfelt endorsement to the blessed event, but he regretfully made it clear that he must turn down the Sister most generous offer to allow him to officiate at the event and provide the pageant winners with their just rewards.

With a twinkle in his eyes, he admonished the assemble media celebs a wry smile and a quick wink, “Who am I to Judge?”

Oh, and for all you fans out there,...... Jesus has left the building!

Pls forgive me Lord, it just seemed appropriate under the circumstances.

Well, there certainly seems to be a very small contingency on these forums....say one....that has become judge and executioner of the current pope.

But here's the issue for the Roman Catholic and if they were to read the Bible for themselves.

Rome has only dogmatically defined less than 40 verses of the Bible...less than 40 in their claimed 2000 years of existence.

Even if a priest is there to help them the Roman Catholic cannot be assured what they are hearing from their priest is actually the correct interpretation of the Word.

The Catholic church is the organization headquartered in the Vatican.

Lay Catholics who try to distance themselves from it are putting themselves in schism with it and putting themselves according to Catholic teaching, in spiritual danger.

Many lay Catholics seem to feel they can sit as judge and jury as to what is *true* Catholicism and what is not, and there is certainly not any agreement among you all even here on FR.

What Catholic doctrine or theology gives you the right or privilege or ability even to decide for yourselves what or who you want to believe and follow and what or who you don’t?

The lay Catholic who sits in judgment of the Catholic religion headquartered in Rome and claims allegiance to the *true* Catholic church, is only holding allegiance to their interpretation of what Catholic church they want to adhere to.

There are some here who don’t think there have been any valid popes for a long time but won’t tell which one they think was the last one.

And which era of Catholicism do you adhere to? Vatican 2? Vatican 1? The Council of Trent? Some other version of Catholicism? And more interestingly, WHY that particular point inn church history?

I don't think there has ever been a valid Pope. Not one. The only head of the Christian Church is Jesus Christ. He is the cornerstone. The title Pope is not mentioned in the Bible. Why would we need one? The Holy Spirit is available to all who earnestly seek help and guidance. Putting ones faith in man made denominations and pastors have led many to stray and fall away because of their shortcomings and sins.

Well, I agree but they think there have been so it’s relevant to them.

Then entire book of Acts is a history of the early church and Paul’s epistles address church leadership and there’s not a thing in it that supports Catholicism’s claims or practice.

You're just full of nonsense tonight.

There's a clear, uninterrupted line of popes, from Peter on. There are also recognized anti-popes.

Trent and VC I are both in full harmony and confirmation of the Catholic faith from apostolic times.

VC II was a rupture in that harmony.

Was not the Holy Spirit promised to ALL believers of Christ??

Last I heard, United Methodists are believers of Christ. Is the Holy Spirit telling them that homosexual marriages are valid but telling other protest sects that such "marriages" are not OK?

No. It's a spirit but an unholy one. Test all values against what is written for our benefit.

And the comical claim of an unbroken line of popes…..as decided by who? Per some RC (?) malcontents we don’t even know when the last legit, in their lofty opinion, pope was!!

And that goes for Bergoglio's Fiducia supplicans, also.

This MAN, for he is nothing but a man, is a destroyer, not a builder...the exact opposite of what Catholics expect their Clergy to be.

Well, he can have his debauchery, perversion and corruption all he wants.

He will soon be gone and we can return to our basic beliefs, WHICH HAVE BEEN STOLEN AND HELD HOSTAGE.

This lunatic Frank want us all to be JESUITS.

NOT GONNA HAPPEN. JUST GO AWAY AND TAKE YOUR TRAVELING CIRCUS WITH YOU.

Yes, I believe that is true, and I ask for the help and guidance of the Holy Spirit every day.

If you read the passage again you will see that it does not say that the Holy Spirit was promised ONLY to the successors of Peter, it deals with what we believe is an area of guidance that the Holy Spirit provides for the successors of Peter.

“Where is this promise to the successors of Peter written in the Bible? I’d really like to look those verses over carefully. Thanks in advance.”

Thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it” (Matt. 16:18).

Now it would be rather silly for someone to think that God meant for his church to be founded only to die with Peter.

And it would be equally silly for someone to think that anyone other than the successors of Peter would be qualified to continue it.

You’re welcome.

And as one reads the ECFs on this issue one will find multiple opinions. There is no clear understanding of what Rome claims on this issue…among others.

“The Roman “Pontiff” changed that causing all to bow to his diktats”

No. Jesus appointed Peter as the first head of the visible Church. Jesus, being God and Man, created the Church the same way He created humanity - as a community with a titular head. As the husband of a family has a duty to care for his family, the Pope has the duty to care for Jesus’ flock.

God didn’t create Adam and Eve as stand-alone humans - they had a duty to set the example to honor God and obey His commandments. When they failed, their failure had lasting consequences, and they lost paradise for not only themselves, but for all mankind. People make a mistake when too narrowly defining God’s Will in His creation, and trying to isolate it to a particular point in time.
