Was Luther totally in the wrong? No. Some Catholic theologians would even say that the Church owes Luther thanks for some of what he did.

And that was my only point...He opened the window.. and let some light in...

He was Catholic in most of his theology.I would suspect most RC's could easily accept his words today without much thought.

As the material states, paying for indulgences was at that time also a form of almsgiving - an act of charity. Almsgiving is often also employed as a form of penance, or a sacrifice. We cannot know the internal disposition of each and every person who pays (or rather paid) for an indulgence, only God would know that, but ideally the faithful were called to do this (pay and receive the indulgence) humbly and with the right intention.

I take it that the Catholic church no longer allows the paying of indulgences anymore?

No, we do not pay for indulgences anymore. But be sure to read the material that I posted in full regarding this for complete understanding.

Luther, as evidenced by his own writings, was emotionally imbalanced.

I don't think that Luther's writings demonstrate that he was emotionally imbalanced at all. That's a cheap shot at best.

I think that Luther's writings reveal a man struggling with the realization (in his mind) that much of what he had been taught and had strongly believed was in error and even corrupt.

Luther was one of those unique individuals who had the courage to stand up and tell the emperor that he had no clothes, but summoning that courage would be emotionally difficult when the emperor is the RCC. It's hard to argue that the Roman Catholic Church is not in many ways designed to discouraged those unique, courageous individuals like Luther.

I also think that every person who calls himself a Christian should thank God daily for the Protestant Reformation. I shudder to think what the RCC would be like if Luther had not been born.

How can one admit to anything when one believes their denomination and it's leader is infallible?

As for me and my house, we will serve the LORD. The LORD is our Rock, upon which He built the Church, His Bride. You remember, Peter spoke the truth about Jesus, upon which the Church would be built: "You are the Christ, the Son of the Living God." This truth (the Messiah) is the foundation of a Church with no denominational name, no walls, no geographic boundaries, and no headquarters other than the throne of God in Heaven.

When you read the Sermon on the Mount Jesus speaks to the house that is built on the rock....and I agree with you that rock is Christ:>))

I agree (crap, what did I just say!) and will add "most RC's" be qualified to include only the United States and the liberal aspects thereof. Would you agree with that?

But you've got to admit, it's pretty "slick".

I would suspect most RC's 'christians' could easily accept his their pastor's words today without much thought.

THIS is (has been) the problem of 'the church' since it's inception. NO ONE is doing much THINKING! Somehow, they get the idea that the 'book' is VERY difficult to understand without someone to explain it to them (other than GOD.)

So, over the years, all KINDS of 'interpretations' are spouted, and bits 'n pieces of these things stick in the mind, clouding the 'Truth'.

I predict THIS thread will expand, with folks 'discussing' long since dead 'holy men', trying to get inside their mindset, all the while, the Word of GOD is being set aside........

NIV 1 Timothy 4:1-3
 1.  The Spirit clearly says that in later times some will abandon the faith and follow deceiving spirits and things taught by demons.
 2.  Such teachings come through hypocritical liars, whose consciences have been seared as with a hot iron.
 3.  They forbid people to marry and order them to abstain from certain foods, which God created to be received with thanksgiving by those who believe and who know the truth.

NIV Isaiah 29:13
 13.  The Lord says: "These people come near to me with their mouth and honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me. Their worship of me is made up only of rules taught by men.

NIV Isaiah 54:13
 13.  All your sons will be taught by the LORD, and great will be your children's peace.

NIV Matthew 15:7-9
 7.  You hypocrites! Isaiah was right when he prophesied about you:
 8.  "`These people honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me.
 9.  They worship me in vain; their teachings are but rules taught by men.' "

NIV John 6:45
 45.  It is written in the Prophets: `They will all be taught by God.'  Everyone who listens to the Father and learns from him comes to me.

NIV Acts 15:1
 1.  Some men came down from Judea to Antioch and were teaching the brothers: "Unless you are circumcised, according to the custom taught by Moses, you cannot be saved."

NIV 1 Corinthians 2:13
 13.  This is what we speak, not in words taught us by human wisdom but in words taught by the Spirit, expressing spiritual truths in spiritual words.

NIV 1 Thessalonians 4:9
 9.  Now about brotherly love we do not need to write to you, for you yourselves have been taught by God to love each other.

I would suspect you would be right...but aside from a few pasts and copies on what indulgences REALLY are I suspect there will be silence...as most of those church fathers either paid some of those indulgences or received them...

I’m curious as to how you happened onto this thread that was last posted to almost six years ago and you’ve only been on FR for three years?

Since I am relatively new, I’m just curious.
