FOUNDER
"Do not think that my love for you or the good qualities you are endowed with, may have me desire that you be just little saints. No, I greatly desire that you become great saints, since you are well equipped to reach this goal... All that is required is that you really mean to develop and give back to Jesus Crucified, in a more refined form, the good qualities and graces He has given you"
[Anthony Mary Zaccaria, Letter XI]

Anthony Mary was an intense admirer of St. Paul, a model he imitated in the most decisive moments of his life.

"St. Anthony Mary"Anthony Zaccaria was born in Cremona, Italy, toward the end of 1502. Since his childhood he distinguished himself by his piety, purity, and charity.
Anthony attended medical school at the University of Padua. Upon completion of his studies in Padua, Anthony returned to Cremona, but, instead of caring for physical infirmities, he "devoted himself to the life of the spirit."
In 1528 Anthony was ordained a priest and began his ministry of preaching God's Word and promoting the "renewal of Christian fervor."

"St. Paul's martyrdom"In 1530 Anthony went to Milan and became a member of the Oratory of Eternal Wisdom where he met Bartolomeo Ferrari and Giacomo Antonio Morigia. With them and under the guidance of his spiritual director, Fra Battista da Crema, Anthony founded the Congregation of the Clerics Regular of St. Paul, approved by Pope Clement VII on February 18, 1533, and confirmed by Pope Paul III on July 24, 1535. The early Barnabites liked to call themselves "Clerics of St. Paul beheaded" for their resolve to imitate Paul even in his sufferings.

"St. Paul's conversion"During these same years Anthony founded the congregation of the Angelic Sisters of St. Paul and formed the group, "The Marrieds of St. Paul."
The Sisters styled themselves "Angelics of St. Paul converted" on account of their special interest in Paul's, and their own ongoing, conversion.

Following the example of St. Paul and compelled by God's love, Anthony tirelessly preached the mystery of the Cross and of the Eucharist.

"St. Anthony Mary's death" Exhausted by his zeal Anthony Zaccaria died in Cremona, in his mother's arms, on July 5, 1539.
An ancient tradition holds that, before expiring, Anthony Mary was granted a vision of St. Paul.
He was canonized by Leo XIII on May 27, 1897. His relics are venerated in the Church of St. Barnabas in Milan, Italy.

The only extant writings of St. Anthony M. Zaccaria are

  • 12 letters, the best known of his writings
  • 6 sermons
  • an outline of the Constitutions for the Barnabites (which were never promulgated)
  • some miscellaneous spiritual thoughts that appear here and there in late Barnabite writings

"St. Paul" Anthony Mary's writings are all Pauline in nature, that is, grounded in, and integrated with, the teachings and sayings of St. Paul.
Anthony Mary's spirituality is totally inspired by St. Paul and is best expressed in Anthony's program for true, personal and collective, renewal of Christian fervor: "You are my crown and my glory, so much so that some day I will make our holy Apostle Paul feel envious of me on account of you. In fact you are not inferior to his [spiritual] daughters in your great desire to suffer for Christ, in your total contempt of worldliness and self-denial, and in your striving to lead people to a spiritual renewal and to Jesus Crucified who is dispised so much."
(Letter V)
This program is presented in the Barnabite Constitutions as (a) "pure self-contempt"; (b) "pure honor of Christ"; (c) "pure service of neighbor."
Inspired by St. Paul, Anthony Mary's spirituality is centered on the Crucified and Eucharistic Christ.

"Christ Crucified"To promote devotion to Christ Crucified Anthony Mary instituted the practice of the tolling of church bells at 3 p.m. every Friday in remembrance of Christ's death on the cross.
He also advised people to make the cross of Christ the object of constant meditation, reflecting often on "the book that records the sweet memory of the cross of Christ" (Letter XI).

"Eucharist"Anthony Mary promoted devotion to the Eucharistic Christ in the form of the Forty Hours devotion, public and solemn adoration of the Blessed Sacrament by turn in various city churches, which he first celebrated in Milan in 1537. He also promoted frequent Holy Communion.

From a sermon to fellow members of his society by Saint Anthony Zaccaria, priest

The Follower of the apostle Paul

We are fools for Christ's sake: our holy guideand most revered patron was speaking about himself and the rest of the apostles, and about the other people who profess the Christian and apostolic way of life. But there is no reason, dear brothers, that we should be surprised or afraid;for the disciple is not superior to his teacher, nor the slave to his master. We should love and feel compassion for those who oppose us, rather than abhor and despise them, since they harm themselves and do us good, and adorn us with crowns of everlasting glory while they incite God's anger against themselves. And even more than this, we should pray for them and not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil by goodness. We should heap good works like red-hot coals of burning love upon their heads, as our Apostle urges us to do, so that when they become aware of our tolerance and gentleness they may undergo a change of heart and be prompted to turn in love to God.

In his mercy God has chosen us, unworthy as we are, out of the world, to serve him and thus to advance in goodness and to bear the greatest possible fruit of love in patience. We should take encouragement not only from the hope of sharing in the glory of God's children, but also from the hardships we undergo.

Consider your calling, dearest brothers;if we wish to think carefully about it we shall see readily enough that its basis demands that we who have set out to follow, admittedly from afar, the footsteps of the holy apostles and the other soldiers of Christ, should not be unwilling to share in their sufferings as well. We should keep running steadily in the race we have started, not losing sight of Jesus, who leads us in our faith and brings it to perfection. And so since we have chosen such a great Apostle as our guide and father and claim to follow him, we should try to put his teaching and example into practice in our lives. Such a leader should not be served by faint-hearted troops, nor should such a parent find his sons unworthy of him.

Tomorrow is first Friday and our pastor always discusses the saint whose feast day is celebrated. Thanks for the ping, it provides a preview of Father's homily.

It's always uplifting to read about those who have attained eternal salvation.

I know! I just love hearing about the saints, and especially the martyrs.I also love the Fathers of the Church.I remember hearing a speaker, some years ago, say something to the effect that one of the problems in the seminaries is that they do not teach about the Fathers of the Church.I wish I could send a note about this to the Bishops Conference.I know I'm just a small fry,but I think teaching our seminarians about the great Church Fathers would do a lot in instilling in them love for the Church and orthodoxy.IMHO.

American Catholic’s Saint of the Day

July 5, 2005
St. Anthony Zaccaria
(1502-1539)

At the same time that Martin Luther was attacking abuses in the Church, a reformation within the Church was already being attempted. Among the early movers of the Counter-Reformation was Anthony Zaccaria. His mother became a widow at 18 and devoted herself to the spiritual education of her son. He received a medical doctorate at 22 and, while working among the poor of his native Cremona, was attracted to the religious apostolate. He renounced his rights to any future inheritance, worked as a catechist, and was ordained a priest at the age of 26. Called to Milan in a few years, he laid the foundations of two religious congregations, one for men and one for women. Their aim was the reform of the decadent society of their day, beginning with the clergy and religious.

Greatly inspired by St. Paul (his congregation is named the Barnabites, after the companion of that saint), Anthony preached with great vigor in church and street, conducted popular missions and was not ashamed of doing public penance.

He encouraged such innovations as the collaboration of the laity in the apostolate, frequent Communion, the Forty Hours devotion and the ringing of church bells at 3:00 p.m. on Fridays.

His holiness moved many to reform their lives but, as with all saints, it also moved many to oppose him. Twice his community had to undergo official religious investigation, and twice it was exonerated.

While on a mission of peace, he became seriously ill and was brought home for a visit to his mother. He died at Cremona at the age of 36.

Comment:

The austerity of Anthony's spirituality and the Pauline ardor of his preaching would probably "turn off" many people today. When even some psychiatrists complain at the lack of a sense of sin, it may be time to tell ourselves that not all evil is explained by emotional disorder, subconscious and unconscious drives, parental influence and so on. The old-time "hell and damnation" mission sermons have given way to positive, encouraging, biblical homilies. We do indeed need assurance of forgiveness, relief from existential anxiety and future shock. But we still need prophets to stand up and tell us, "He who says he is without sin is a liar."

Quote:

''I charge you in the presence of God and of Christ Jesus, who will judge the living and the dead, and by his appearing and his kingly power: proclaim the word; be persistent whether it is convenient or inconvenient; convince, reprimand, encourage through all patience and teaching. For the time will come when people will not tolerate sound doctrine but, following their own desires and insatiable curiosity, will accumulate teachers and will stop listening to the truth and will be diverted to myths" (2 Timothy 4:1-4).

St. Anthony Mary Zaccaria, Priest
Optional Memorial
July 5th

St. Anthony Mary Zaccaria had a special devotion to the Crucified Christ, also to our Eucharistic Lord.

Saint Anthony Mary Zaccaria was born in Cremona, Italy, he founded the group called the Clerks Regular of St. Paul (also termed Barnabites), an order dedicated to working for the renewal of the clergy and laity. He was a preacher who worked to reform the Church. He was only thirty-six years old when he died.

Collect:
Lord,
enable us to grasp in the spirit of Saint Paul,
the sublime wisdom of Jesus Christ,
the wisdom which inspired Saint Anthony Zaccaria
to preach the message of salvation in your church.
Grant this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,
who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit,
one God, forever and ever. Amen.

First Reading: 2 Timothy 1:13-14, 2:1-3
Follow the pattern of the sound words which you have heard from me, in the faith and love which are in Christ Jesus; guard the truth that has been entrusted to you by the Holy Spirit who dwells within us. You then, my son, be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus, and what you have heard from me before many witnesses entrust to faithful men who will be able to teach others also. Share in suffering as a good soldier of Christ Jesus.

Gospel Reading: Matthew 10:13-16
And if the house is worthy, let your peace come upon it; but if it is not worthy, let your peace return to you. And if any one will not receive you or listen to your words, shake off the dust from your feet as you leave that house or town. Truly, I say to you, it shall be more tolerable on the day of judgment for the land of Sodom and Gomorrah than for that town. Behold, I send you out as sheep in the midst of wolves; so be wise as serpents and innocent as doves.
