No myth, no canard, just absolute fact.

Smith was a shiftless neer-do-well who had dropped to the level of cleaning barns, sheds and attics for food and saleable items. It was when he was cleaning Spaulding's mother's attic that he encountered the manuscript for the book, which he stole, and used for the basis of the book of mormon (with a few bits of scripture thrown in).
