The comparison to Goldwater is, I think, an apt one.
Goldwater excited a generation of future conservative leaders while they were still just college kids, and that's what Ron Paul is doing today. On another forum I visit, one of the guys posted a picture of Ron Paul with the caption, "Yes, mom's going to be pissed that you donated next semester's tuition"
That's pretty funny because it has some ring of truth to it, something you couldn't say if it were about another Republican candidate. Who else is getting college kids in large numbers to learn about individual freedom and limited government? No one.
Goldwater lost big time, but he left behind a legacy - a group of young people who had become interested for the first time in politics. Ron Paul is doing the same thing today. Every day, some more or less apolitical college kid whose opinions have been formed mostly by the mainstream media hears about him and goes to his
issues page. Where else are these kids hearing positive things about property rights and low taxes and gun ownership? Almost all of them know Social Security is a political scam and they'll never see a dime. Who else is saying so right on his campaign website?
Ron Paul may not even be in the race in a couple of months, but he has already changed the world by waking up some youngsters, just like Goldwater did before him. The GOP is just being stupid by shunning Paul and cozying up to northeastern liberals, IMO. Pushing away potential allies. It's like they want a third party to emerge.

What the Ron Paul campaign has done is expose the truth that there is no difference between either Party and that either the Constitutionalists are going to take over the GOP, or it is going the way of the Whig Party.
