President of the John Birch Society, John. F. McManus gives a damning presentation in 1996 on the real Newt Gingrich, who at the time was Speaker of Congress. Here's an excerpt:
'In addition to Gingrich's disdain for the constitution he has managed to acquire a reputation as a brash, unfeeling and arrogant know it all. His negative rating among the American peoeple is higher than Bill Clinton's. Democratic candidates from coast to coast are looking forward to tying their Republican opponents to the controversy surrounding the Speaker, controversy that has been created by the speaker himself. A very astute observer of American politcs recently summarized the difficult situation facing good congressmen facing re-election in 1996, he said this: "Gingrich has achieved something almost unthinkable. He has kept Republican freshman from being conservative and yet set them up for possible defeat in November for being too conservative". That takes brilliance.'

He’s always been a compromiser and a bit of a political opportunist, but at the end of the day he’s done more to move the nation in the right direction than almost anyone - a lot more than I can say for any of the armchair quarterbacks over at JBS.
That is fine, it is the paranoid delusions that get in the way. Not to mention the long time technique of the JBS to make alliances with liberals to defeat non - JBS conservatives,
