The House of Representatives returned from its summer recess today with the millstone of California Democrat Gary Condit hanging around the collective necks of Members.
Waiting to greet them and Condit was the D.C. Chapter of Free Republic. At 8:30 a.m., Dave Dilegge and I went to Condit's office bearing gifts for him and his staff. The media seige outside the 2nd floor office in the Rayburn building had not fully returned to its pre-recess strength--just two members of the media were on stake out duty.
Newspapers were piled by the locked office door, so we left our gifts on the floor in front of it for all to see: three black Condit Zone t-shirts, each spread out with the message facing up.
At 12:30, we gathered on the grass in front of the House chamber at the East Front of the Capitol to urge the Members to 'clean House' and expel Condit if he won't resign.
We averaged about 10 FReepers during the almost two hours I was there. Some of us brought our own signs, but mostly we used signs made by tgslTakoma--who couldn't be there.
Our modest gathering drew the attention of a reporter from WUSA-9, the D.C. CBS affiliate, who interviewed a few of us on camera. Pedestrian traffic was light around the Capitol grounds, even though the weather was gorgeous. A few tourists approached us to give their support of our call for Condit's expulsion, or to ask questions about the situation. Periodically, Dave would walk around and pass out fliers to passersby.
Congressman were hard to find as the time approached for the recess to end at 2 p.m. Only a few dozen walked outdoors to get to the House chamber. One we did see was Peter King (RINO-NY)who was yucking it up with a reporter as he walked by about 100 feet in front of us. King ignored us when we asked him if he thought it was time to clean House--starting with Gary Condit.
He did look over to see who was talking to him, but at least he didn't give us the finger like he did the last time we saw him.
The Honor Roll for today: Dave Dilegge, Gore War Vet, Hail Caesar, GunsAreOK, AntiTyrant, Leadpenny, AU Eagle, BruceFromMtVernon, two whose names I didn't write down (sorry), and kristinn.
EAGLES UP !!!
Thanks from all of us on the left coast for your efforts.
FOX5 local news at 10 pm in NYC had a segment by Rita Cosby on Condit's no-show today. They showed the t-shirts on the floor. That probably was a national report and appeared on every FOX affilate's late night newscast.
Too bad you didn't have an "END INTERN ABUSE" shirt to leave.
Thanks for all the advance work you guys did. Kristinn, your stand-up with the Channel 9 reporter was professional and to the point. Gunsareok, you were pretty smooth too. Sorry I missed it on TV. Just can't watch the local PC crowd.
And to AU Eagle, hope you can get some of your AU friends out for the Saturday FReep.
See everyone then.

Just after you left the New York Post took two pictures, a group shot with the Capitol in the background and one of the Condit Zone T-shirt. Wish I had gotten a shot of the early Christmas gifts we left at Condit's office.
For the most part, the day was pretty low key. Much like the Modesto report states the press were not out in the numbers expected. But we did manage to talk to a lot of tourists and others who now have a leaflet with the Free Republic url.
I have all the signs and will have them there on Saturday - my pictures from yesterday will be posted to this thread ASAP.
