[history]
Smokers huddled outside office buildings may seem beleaguered, but they should count their blessings. The freedom to puff a cigarette downstairs at work is slowly being extinguished. With little fanfare, smoking has quietly been prohibited even outside the premises of many companies. Meanwhile, college students are told they can do most anything inside their dorm rooms, except, of course, smoke.

I went to a party once with a lady friend who warned me that the house was a no smoking zone and that if I wanted to smoke, I would have to go outside. The big deal was that they had a new baby and didn't want it sickened by tobacco smoke.
When we got to the door it had a couple of large no smoking signs on it.
When we got inside, the air was blue with marijuana smoke....

his colleagues may remind him that he's a walking ashtray in violation of office rules.I am personally responsible for an "Out-of-order" sign on a facility bathroom. I had gone crazy on the garlic in some pinto beans the prior weekend. If I worked there, they would be begging me to smoke. After all, because of the Americans with Disabilities Act, flatulance can't get me fired. Reminds me of a Steve Martin routine turned on it's head. Oh, I can't smoke outside? Mind if I **** in here?

the air was blue with marijuana smokeGo easy on that stuff, it'll make you crazy and wanting white women. < /sarcasm>
The war on cannabis is racist at it's roots, as is the war on guns. Can't have "those people" having weapons. Hypocrisy is common among liberals because of the cognitive dissonance they exhibit.

"Meanwhile, college students are told they can do most anything inside their dorm rooms, except, of course, smoke."
The reality for most college students is of course, partying off campus, which quite often means drunk driving.

I have no objection when butt-suckers want to indulge their drug cravings in private, but I do object when they compel me to join them, just as I object to loud low-quality music (rap, disco, Manilow, Welk, etc), dwiesel vehicles, fondling strangers and defecating on the sidewalks.
What people do to themselves (whether they use tobacco, marijuana or alcohol) is their own business (until they make demands on public funds or services); but when they cannot indulge their depravities except at the expense of others, the others have a right to protect themselves through legislation.
If those who advocate "Smokers' Rights" had instead advocated "Smokers' Courtesy", we wouldn't have all the laws and rules we have today. Smokers have exactly the same rights as anyone else. They have the right to breathe fresh air. Where did they ever get the idea they have a right to contaminate everyone else's air?

I know a few people who are on the road sales people driving tens of thousands of miles a year in their company cars doing sales calls. Most of them smoke, but a few have been told by their sales managers that they better not hear from customers that they are showing up on sales calls smelling like an ashtray. They tell me they now put their suitcoat in the trunk when they drive and they hold their cigarette outside the car and blow the smoke out the window when they drive to try and smell as little like smoke as possible.
It's sort of amusing to see them (and an growing amount of other people these days, too), driving around with one hand on the wheel and the other hand fully outside the car holding the cigarette. I'm seeing this more and more every day. I know a few married couples where only one is a smoker (or one quit) and it seems when one has to use the non smokers car, he or she is TOLD, not to leave it smelling like cigarettes.
And people thought driving with a cell phone was dangerous...how about with one hand in the car and the othetr outside the car.

A bit of dishonesty. ???

I always like the questions of "Why do you smoke?"
Well, I like it a lot more now that I've figured out how to short-circuit the conversation that always ensues after that question, since they always want to tell you how harmful it is to your health, and don't you know it'll make you sick, and don't you want to live a long time, etc., etc., etc.
But now, whenever someone asks me why I smoke, I always answer "Because it's bad for me."
It's fabulous, because very few people are quick enough on their feet to deal with someone who's so obviously self-destructive ;)

Someone could make millions inventing a silent sterile house for sensitive people such as you.
And what do you mean "Fresh Air," do tell where you found such a thing.

Better days coming! The purpose of government is to govern. One of the best ways to govern is to limit offensive and nonessential public behavior like weedburning. A new agenda might be limiting weedburning to private residences. This is not a Constitutional/liberty issue - it's a personal obnoxious behavior issue. Help is available - like patches. Using heroin in public is illegal... BTW, I thought prohibition can't work/won't work. If that's true, and they're going to smoke anyway no matter what the government does, what's the problem? Hmmm...

After watching an aunt die of emphysema due to a long standing habit, I quit! I wouldn't want to be strapped to an oxygen bottle for the last year of my life.

Someone could make millions inventing a silent sterile house for sensitive people such as you. Who said any thing about silent or sterile? Why do you people always miss the point and just make something up?
And what do you mean "Fresh Air," do tell where you found such a thing.
Thanks to controls on smoking, most air (except in certain cities) is just fine now. It's possible to enjoy a meal in a restaurant without having to share a cigarette with some incosiderate buffon who's oblivious to where his unused smoke is drifting.
Like having sex with animals, smoking is a vile, disgusting habit. It stinks, and the toxic effluent irritates the eyes and mucous membranes of normal people. This doesn't mean people shouldn't be allowed to smoke; it just means they should go off by themselves where they won't bother others.

I have another solution, one that gives everybody their rights............ Stay away from places which allows smoking........ fanatic ANTI's are much more vile than is smokers.

You know! I'm really fed up with being categorized into one lump sum with drug addicts! Why is it when we really enjoy something, we are labeled ADDICTS? Smoking in no way alters the mind like pills, alcohol or weed. Give me a break.
If a person has a compulsion to work out at the gym everyday, does that make them addicts? If a person cant get away from their computers, does that make them an addict? Guys cant wait to sink more money into their hot rods. Addicts?
Why oh why is it, when we really enjoy something, the ANTIS call us ADDICTS? IM SICK OF IT.
Food for thought: drugs are either illegal or you need a prescription. May I remind you that tobacco IS a legal commodity!

Scientific research indicates that nicotine is more addictive than alcohol, marijuana or heroin. It's harder to kick than any of the others; and when nicotine addicts are deprived of their drug, they resort to crime just like any crack addict.
I don't care if people want to use these substances responsibly. I do care when they drive under the influence and kill people (to my knowledge, smokers don't do this), or when they turn to crime to support their habits (again, because their drug is legal, smokers seldom do this either).
My objection to smokers is their belief that they should be allowed to contaminate everyone else's air so they can satisfy their self-induced cravings.

This didn't work before we had the laws restricting smoking. Very few businesses had the cojones to limit smoking, and the result was that there were very few places you could go to avoid smokers.
Since it's smokers who want to do something that others find offensive, it's only logical that they should find a place to do it by themselves.
Because smokers don't grasp this simple point of courtesy, it's been necessary to pass laws. By making it necessary to pass these laws, smokers have unleashed a monster that does sometimes go to far. However, because of the collective rudeness of smokers, most Americans prefer the excesses to the situation we had before.
