House OKs trade relations with Vietnam
The United States would have normal trade relations
with former enemy Vietnam
under legislation the House approved Thursday, 9/6/01 on a voice vote.
The Senate is expected to approve it next month.
Normalizing trade would boost U.S. companies' access to
Vietnam's 80 million people and improve Vietnam's economy.
Opponents say Vietnam persecutes religious and ethnic minorities.
Lawmakers voted to link future increases in non-humanitarian aid to Vietnam's improvement on human rights.
The pact would remove one of the last vestiges of a war
that ended 26 years ago with the
defeat of South Vietnamese forces and the establishment of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam.

Bump! Just saw a show with real Nam POW'S on tv today...some held for as long as 9 years. Couldn't help but cry. This is a heartbreaking issue.

Most of the men in Vietnam who were not recovered were simply blown to bits. It sickens me how stupid 80s movies like Rambo and Missing in Action played on the emotions of families who lost their love ones in the conflict. Your statement is an even greater myth than Rambo. Large numbers who were never returned were last known to be alive on the ground. Those "blown to bits" are a tiny minority of those still officially missing.
You need to avoid making definitive statements on subjects about which you obviously know very little.

Our congressional allies in this are few. They include:
Senator Bob Smith (NH)
Senator Charles Grassley (IA)
Congressman Duncan Hunter (CA)
Congressman Dan Burton (IN)
Congressman Dana Rohrabacher (CA)
Vietnam vets in congress who supported normalization and undoubtedly support this include:
John McCain, John Kerry, Chuck Robb, David Bonior and Tom Daschle, all of whom, not coincidentally, aren't worth the powder to blow 'em up, IMO.

Always an
OPERATION BOLD MARINER thanks for the flag, TGYC. I'll always appreciate your telling me what you and I served in, but I never knew by name.
Some stuff in my profile however, might indicate why I AM WITH THIS!
For all seemingly lost behind us, I still believe we eventually will have won the war!
Number One, Always to you, Buddy.

Brother, I respect your viewpoint.
You earned the right to "vote" on this issue.
And you are man enough to state your "vote" in public
unlike the House "voice vote."
The BIG difference is their vote effects the entire nation.
Welcome Home Brother!
