I am an American Citizen
E-mail from friend ^ | 9/13/01 | Chad Erbe

These are my thoughts at 24 hours after the terrorist acts committed against the United States. They are my opinions and statements and are by no means correct.

I am an American Citizen. By this I mean that I am a citizen of the United States, North America, and the World.

I am an American Citizen. I believe strongly in the power of the democracy that grants me my freedom, and the liberty to write statements such as these. I believe strongly in the principles under which my country was founded and the principles which guided its founding.

I am an American Citizen. I trust the skills and abilities of my government to represent my interests both within the United States and abroad. If this trust is violated, I understand that it is my responsibility to remove these people from my trust and to no longer allow them to represent my interests.

I am an American Citizen. I very strongly believe that it is with moderation and understanding that we can bring to justice those who have wronged us as a nation.

I am an American Citizen. It is with great sorrow that I understand that wrongs such as those that were committed upon us such as those committed on September 11, 2001 are the price of the freedoms that I expect as an American Citizen. It is only with these freedoms that I can continue to pursue life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. I understand that my freedoms come with the potential of danger, yet I believe that I must pay the price of these freedoms.

I am an American Citizen. It is with the greater good in mind that I endeavor to pursue my life. My life is only temporary - I understand that. I am willing to give my life to ensure that the lives of many are preserved. This is my responsibility. For this reason, I will abide by decisions made on my behalf by those who represent me to destroy my life that the whole may continue strong.

I am an American Citizen. I implicitly trust the investigating agencies within the United States and those assisting throughout the world. I would like to state that I am more interested in the fact that we are correct in the prosecution of the people who are responsible for the heinous acts committed against my way of life than I am of receiving information rapidly. I would prefer that the investigations proceed according to the laws of my country than I would that the investigation be speedy. The laws that provide me my freedoms and the principles under which they are founded are more important than an expeditious determination as to who is responsible.

I am an American Citizen. I understand that the freedom of the press is one of the bulwarks of the Constitution of the United States. I also admonish the press to use care with their reporting so as to not impede or interfere with the investigation of these heinous acts. I would rather trust that the government is acting within my best interests and receive information in a timely fashion than potentially alert criminals of the possibility that they will be apprehended.

I am an American Citizen. I will adhere to values that may seem foreign to citizens of other nations. I may not agree with the points of view of these people, however, I do believe that it is within my right to disagree or agree with your viewpoint without raising the threat of violence against you. This is one of the primary values of my nation and one of the principles under which my government is founded. I cannot abide the use of violence to prove a point or to make a statement for I have innumerable resources for you to voice your opinion. Like me, I ask that you understand and accept the fact that you will not always be considered to be correct by the majority, yet your voice will be heard. One of the fundamental principles of my democracy is that although the majority may not always be correct, they are always right. I know that due to human frailties there is the capacity for us to be incorrect, yet I believe that we should follow the will of the majority. This is my responsibility as a an American Citizen.

I am an American Citizen. I tend to believe that just as we were taught by John Wayne in his many portrayals principles that we hold dear that we can as a people react and respond to situations such as this in the interests of humanity and with deference to the principles which give me my freedoms. I will not attack those who disagree with me except under these principles for without them I am lost. Chad -- American Citizen

This was from an e-mail I received from my friend Chad. I found it very thoughtful, concise and uplifting. So, I thought I'd share it with other American Citizens. BTW I whole-heartedly agree with these words. WORDS MEAN THINGS! NOTE: You will not see this editorial at his website, it was sent as e-mail to friends.

Chad is an idealist. Not everyone in this world plays by the rules. I am a realist. I realize that the laws of other nations may have to be broken, not only to achieve justice, but to make damned sure this never ever ever happens again. I want terrorists to know that not only will they and their colleagues be exterminated, but that their entire nation will be forever exterminated if they do anything like this again. Sadly, "turning the other cheek" in this situation will achieve nothing more than another bloody cheek.

I don't recall seeing anything in this that intoned turning the other cheek. I don't think that's what he's saying at all. I think he's saying not to be rash and visit our wrath on the wrong people, to be sure that we send the proper people to Hell.

BS

There was no moderation or understanding in the planes sent into the towers.

I have none today for my enemies.

Greetings from Galapagos -- anchored off small Bartolomé, an uninhabited island just off Santiago Island. A couple of foreign yacths waving US flags at us and radioed invites for dinner. Lots of warm supportive messages. Glad we are aboard than trying to make airine connections. Have heard from others here of gross chaos trying to make flights to the States.

My "turn the other cheek" comment was a personal aside. It would be great if that were possible, but these people are seemingly unredeemable. I should have put it in another paragraph.

My issue is specifically with Chad's statements which included "the prosecution of the people who are responsible" and "with moderation and understanding." Thankfully, we won't get a chance to "prosecute" these thugs or treat them with "moderation and understanding" because the evidence necessary to gain extradition will never be good enough for the harboring countries. Accordingly, we will be able to exact our justice through war which, due to the sorry state of our judicial system, is infinitely more fulfilling to the majority's sense of justice.

Otherwise, I have nothing but praise for Chad's writing, but the content is, at times, idealistic.

But then YOU didn't have to pay that price, did you wimp?
Ask the people on those airplanes just before they slammed into the buildings if they were willing to pay the price for your "freedoms"!

YOU MAKE ME SICK !!
