Cole launches a day ahead of schedule
Relaunch marks the completion of all structural repairs

The U.S. Navy launched the USS Cole back into the water Friday, a day earlier than scheduled, at Northrop Grumman Ship Systems' Ingalls Operations in Pascagoula, Mississippi.

The Navy gave no reason for the early launch. But the switch came only days after terrorists attacked New York and Washington D.C., leaving thousands dead.

Osama bin Laden, a Saudi exile operating out of Afghanistan, has been connected with those attacks as well as the terrorists who detonated an explosives-packed boat next to the Cole in the Yemen port of Aden on Oct. 12.

The Cole returned to the United States in December aboard the Norwegian heavy transport ship V Blue Marlin and was moved onto a land level facility near where the Cole was originally built at Ing alls Shipbuilding.

Restoration of Cole started in March, and repairs are expected to continue through April 2002.

The relaunch marks the completion of all structural repairs, said Capt. Philip Johnson, the Navy's Supervisor of Shipbuilding in Pascagoula. Other completed work includes the replacement of damaged and unserviceable equipment, and removal, evaluation and recertification of critical systems such as shafting and propellers.

Following the relaunch, work will be completed on component system assemblies; alignment of machinery; energizing, testing and alignment of all systems; and completion of logistics and supply support outfitting. The Cole will then be turned over to the crew for training and re-certification.

"The SUPSHINorthrop Grumman team is proud of the role we have played in restoration of the USS Cole, The Determined Warrior. Having the right team allowed us to complete repairs in an expeditious manner," said Johnson in a prepared statement.

I commented on a thread yesterday that the terrorists had completed the job on the WTC (2nd attempt) and wondered if they would try to complete the job on the USS Cole. I expect this early launch may have considered that possibility. (Pascagoula is Trent Lott's home town)

"The Cole is going back to collect on an "Old Debt"! AND WE ALL GET TO WATCH!"

As an Army vet, it always amazed me how Navy Vessels seem to have lives of their own, despite (or perhaps, because of) crew rotations, commanders, actions, etc. It only seems appropriate that they are so often referred to in the feminine third person, given the affection of so many rugged men. As the Cole puts out a day early, all I can think of is a simple adage that begins, "Hell hath no fury..."

As fitting as that would be, and as much as I'd like to see that, it won't happen. There was a blurb about the Cole launching on CNN last night, and it was mentioned that it will be months before the ship is actually seaworthy and useable. The side is repaired, the decks are in place, and the ship can be floated on its own, but it'll be a while until the ship is fully re-equipped and battle ready.

"Huh? It's in the national news. Geez, settle down. ....and if you'll read the article, it's not going anywhere, it's not completed repairs yet.

Sorry Blue, but the Navy ANNOUNCED this move publically. Both ABC and CNN have run blurbs on it since that announcement. If it's already been broadcasted around the world, mentioning it on Free Republic certainly isn't going to hurt our readiness.

The reason we where successful during WWII is because we did not make it public knowledge of ship and troop movements. The news agencies did not report on things until after they had happened. Our grandparents understood this concept of not knowing until after the fact. My Grandmother still has letters from my Grandfather who was in the South Pacific with the SeaBees. Most of the letters look like moths had eaten them. They looked like that because the censors cut out parts of letters that entailed movements and locations that would have given information to the enemy. The best thing to do know is to make that same kind of commitment now and stick to it. We all worry about our friends and loved ones in all branches of the military, the best thing we can do is keep tight lipped about what we know and accept what the officials are willing to let us know about what is going on. This will provide more protection that any modern weapon. Loose Lips Sink Ships. Aaron R. HT2(SW) May Gods Have Mercy on us ALL
