But An Attempt On Bin Laden's Life Failed
(CBS) CBS 60 Minutes Correspondent Lesley Stahl reports that there are indications that President Clinton ordered Osama bin Laden's apprehension or death, and that there was a failed attempt on bin Laden's life last year.
Here are the details: Following the attacks on the U.S. embassies in Africa in August 1998, President Clinton signed a directive authorizing the CIA to apprehend bin Laden and bring him to the United States to stand trial for his role in the bombings.
The directive, which was modified several times, authorized the use of deadly force if taking bin Laden alive was deemed impossible. And in fact, according to government sources, non-Americans (we don't know what nationality) working on behalf of the CIA tried to kill bin Laden last year.
These foreign operatives told the CIA they fired a rocket-propelled grenade at bin Laden as he drove in a convoy of cars through a mountainous road in Afghanistan, and that the grenade hit one of the vehicles -- though not the one bin Laden was in.
According to CBS News sources, members of the House and Senate intelligence committees were notified of both the presidential directive and the attempt on bin Laden's life.
CBS News has been told that the Clinton administration got around the long-time ban on government assassinations by coming up with a so-called "self-defense exception." The idea is that lethal force could be used against someone who either poses an imminent threat on U.S. national security or personnel, or has attacked U.S. interests in the past and is deemed likely to do so again.
As to why this story is getting out only now, Stahl suggests it might be that "there are people in Washington who want the American people to know they have not been asleep at the wheel in the war on terrorism and, even though there may have been some failures, they have been trying." ©MMI, CBS Worldwide Inc. Is that anything like the non-existent "Clinton Rule" that the Stanislaus County DA used to avoid pressing subornation of perjury and obstruction of justice charges against Gary Condit?
I thought the ban was an executive order. In that case, why would they have needed a so-called "self-defense exception"? They could have simply revoked the executive order, I would think.
House Intel Committee?
Was that before the Condit/Chandra escapade or after Condit and the flight attendant's go-round?
Either way our House Intel Committee was busy at the time.
Maybe Hillary's got it?
Then again, what did Hillary know and when did she know it?
Funny. But I'm not laughing. Are you?
The Klintoon mob is trying to pre-empt the truth -- that they took a 'hands off' attitude to terrorism, because it was too much like real work!
Madeleine Albright said we should support (train) the KLA so they could defend themselves -- while it was well known that they are funded by bin Laden, and share the drug trade.
Evil Willie is culpable as Hell in this !
I believe so. I think that was one of the first things Bush did after Tuesday's attack.
...and that's all I need to read to conclude that this BS has been manufactured by the Clinton Machine and dutifully "reported" by the Faithful in the media.
Guess the "How I Almost Killed bin Laden" chapter is a late addition to the entire lie his book will be.
Amen.

I think this might be the REAL reason this "report" (planted, no doubt) is "getting out" now is because of this article:
Clinton rejected military strike on bin Laden
Or this one:
Report: Clinton Nixed Hit on Bin Laden
Or this one:
In final Clinton days, a chance to attack bin Laden was rejected
Both Hillary and Bill Clinton were asked about these very reports last week LIVE on TV; that's why you're reading this CBS drivel!
Dang, this has started my whole day with a rage!
CLITON WHINES: DON'T BLAME ME
This is a PACK of lies.
