"PATTON VS. THE GODFATHER"
This much we know for sure: George W. Bush is no George S. Patton.
Then again, this is a different time, were facing a different enemy and, lets face it, thats just not this presidents style.
What the country needs right now, and what we all should hope this president will be, is a different kind of general, which Ill get to in a minute.
But if youre like me, in those hours immediately following the 911 attacks, your blood was boiling and you longed for immediate and massive retribution. You were dying for the president to come on the air and give the same kind of speech as the one in that opening scene of the early 70s movie Patton.
Here, tell me if these snippets of that famous Patton speech arent along the lines of what you were secretly yearning for during those early appearances by the president. . .
You know, I pity those poor bastards we're going against--by God, I do. We won't just shoot the bastards. We're going to cut out their living guts and use them to grease the treads of our tanks. We're going to murder those lousy...bastards by the bushel.
Hoo-ha! Lock and load!
There's another thing I want you to remember. I don't want to get any messages saying: We are holding our position. We're not holding anything. . . . We are advancing constantly and are not interested in holding anything, except onto the enemy. We're going to hold on to him by the nose and kick him in the ass. We'll kick the hell out of him all the time. We'll go through them like crap through a goose.
Glory, glory hallelujah!
OK, just a one more, cause just reading and writing these stirring words does the heart good.
All real Americans love the sting of battle. When you were kids you all admired the champion marble player, the fastest runner, the big league ballplayers, the toughest boxers. Americans love a winner and do not tolerate a loser. Americans play to win all the time. I wouldn't give a hoot in hell for a man who lost and laughed. That's why Americans have never lost, and will never lose a war, for the very thought of losing is hateful to Americans.
Damn straight.
Alas, this is the 21st century, not the 1940s. And were not up against a standing army, but rag-tag band of cut-throat guerillas. And George W. Bush is president of the United States, not a gritty, battle-tough general of Third Army.
No, the times and circumstances of today call for an entirely different kind of leader.
Someone more like . . . Michael Corleone.
Youll recall that Michael was the good son in that other great 1970s movie, The Godfather; the one who only reluctantly got involved in the familys business after a sneak attack on his father.
Unlike his hot-headed brother, Sonny, Michael remained cool even as he seethed beneath the surface. He lulled the guy responsible for his fathers attempted murder into a false sense of security . . . then blew his brains out over a plate of linguini in a New York restaurant.
But he didnt stop there.
He allowed the passion and rage of the moment to die down without forgetting about the others who were indirectly involved. He waited and he waited - until the time was right.
Then, while the new don stood as godfather at his nephews baptism, his soldiers wiped out the rest of the familys enemies. Barzini, Tattaglia, Moe Greene and the other heads of the Five Families were rubbed out in one precise, highly-coordinated cold-blooded group assassination.
There was no collateral damage. Thats what we need.
Bin Laden: Dead.
Gaddafi: Dead. Hussein: Dead.
Neidermeyer! Wait, that was a different movie.
Anyway, despite the horror visited upon America on its own turf last week, such harsh talk will make a lot of Americans squeamish. And you can bet your bottom dollar the self-righteous that-just-makes-us-as-bad-as-they-are crowd will be in full throat.
And when Americans hear those whiny, bleeding heart voices, I hope they remember all those innocent bleeding bodies senselessly slaughtered on September 11, 2001.
Never again should America be lulled into a false sense of security by the simple-minded liberals who told us we could negotiate with such barbarians and who admonished us to be more understanding.
And much like Carlo, the brother-in-law who ratted out Sonny, liberals now have to answer for their role in what happened last week. Theyve been responsible for gutting our intelligence and defense capabilities for decades.
As Michael told Carlo, Youre out of the family business, thats your punishment. Youre finished.
Thats the fate that should await anti-defense liberals - of BOTH parties - come election day next year.
The barbarians arent at our gate; theyre in our living rooms. And protecting Americans from these animals isnt a job for the timid, touchy-feely flower children who have been running the show for the last eight years. Its time to put the adults back in charge.
George W. Bush might not sound like George S. Patton, but lets hope he acts like Michael Corleone.

Yeah, but then after Carlo was comforted by the promise that he wouldn't be killed, Michael ordered a car to take Carlo to the airport. Of course, once Carlo got in the car, he was instantly strangled to death.
The other guy pulls a knife
you pull a gun
The other guy puts one your guys in the hospital
You put his in the morgue
On the other hand, I do not think that this sounds like Michael Corleone:
"When I take action, I'm not gonna fire a 2 million dollar missile at an empty 10 dollar tent and hit a camel in the butt. It will be decisive."
But he is 100 times a better American than FDR and that's what counts!
Nukem
sw
I hate it when that happens...
Can I 'do' kennedy and klintons? Or fineswine maybe?
