FL College Refuses Show of Patriotism
Paul Harvey Radio Program September 19, 2001
Posted on 09/19/2001 5:56:15 AM PDT by FreedomsCause
Paul Harvey announced on his show this morning that a librarian by the name of Cathy Hoeth at Florida Gulf Coast University in Ft Myers, FL refused to let students wear stickers proclaiming their pride in being Americans for "fear of offending foreign students."
As was the case with NCCI, the Florida company which at first refused to allow employees to display American flags and other patriotic memorabilia until it was bombarded with faxes, phone calls and emails, FGCU needs to hear LOUDLY from ALL of us, protesting this deplorable action.
Cathy Hoeth may be reached at khoeth@fgcu.edu or by phone at (941) 590-7605.

While I was not surprised at NCCI (it was in Boca Raton, deep in the blue zone, after all), the fact that this would happen in a nice "red" area like Ft. Myers surprises me. Then again, this is academia, which has never really cared about patriotism anyhow.

Just finished clicking my send button.
I just read about your position on not wanting to offend foreign students and was stunned by your ignorance. This is America...we are the standard for the world. What kind of logic do you rely on when making a decision that puts foreign students before American citizens/students?
Maybe you should move to some other country and then you can live out the dream of your liberal/diverse agenda in the peace and quiet and no-doubt superior academic settings of their way of life. People like you need to make way for those of us who understand what's going on in the world!

Here is what I just sent to them: Please tell Cathy that she should not worry so much about offending 200 foreign students because she has just offended 275,000,000 Americans. Oops, I forgot, it wouldn't be that many. There are still a lot of liberals around. Regards, Dale

F##K feelings - that sissy bs of the left is what got us to this tragic point. I do not give a sh#t about your feelings, it is your actions that matter to me!

Sent to the PROVOST: RE: Cathy Hoeth. Is this really America when such a person refuses to let its citizens show their patriotism to THEIR OWN COUNTRY? Is this really America when such a person thinks foreigners "feelings" are more important than those of our own citizens? Is this really America when such a person thinks she has the AUTHORITY to ban the wearing of patriotic symbols? (Gee, what happened to "free speech," for Americans?) This is NOT our America. This is the Amerika the academic community has tried to build. I think your time as destroyers of America ended on 9/11/01. Please see that your policies are NOW changed to reflect true AMERICA, which was constructed under GOD's guidance and the patriotism of our brilliant founding fathers. Without them you would likely be living life under a totalitarian regime like many of those elsewhere. Good day.

And what exactly did she plan to do to these students if they refused to take off their flags or stickers? Hopefully the students told her to go you know where. Stef

A couple of thoughts,
1 I do wonder if MZZZZZZ Hoeth would rule the same way for a button that said "ashamed of America"?
2 Somewhere along the line some people have gotten the idea that we have a constitutional right not to be offended. Where they have gotten this idea I have no idea. Someone should tell her that the free speech clause of the 1st amendment is about offensive speech.

E-mail to the Provost
Sir,
I understand that one of your employees, Cathy Hoeth has refused to allow students to show their patriotism out of " fear of offending foreign students."
As a native born AMERICAN I wish to tell you sir that it is I which is OFFENDED by this egregious lack of judgement by Ms. Hoeth. I am offended that the feelings of foreign students would be placed above ours at a time when we have near 6000 people laying dead at the hands of foreigners in the heart of our most important city.
I for one now have drawn the line on the Political Corectness that has infected our nation. The type of unthinking PC exhibited by Cathy Hoeth WILL NOT FLY ANYMORE. It is now time for a renewal of our patriotism not a misguided, moronic attempt to dampen it. This IS the greates nation on the face of the planet and we will not stand in fear of showing pride in our country.
As Ms. Hoeth has exhibited a serious lack of sense and judgement I question weather she is fit for employment as a teacher with your institution. In view of this I encourage you to seriously examine her employment status.
Respectfully submitted
