Last year, there was great comcern about Klinton's exec order that turned over federal emergency powers over to Janet Reno. The order cam sometime in May, I believe, but was to take effect in October, 3 months before Clinton's term would end and Reno would be replaced.
I and many others could not figure out why he would take such a step, but most did agree that it could not be for any "good" reason.
We have all seen the bitter disposition displayed by Hillary Klinton in recent days. She could not even control herself on national television last night. What was she thinking? Could it be that she was thinking that this was supposed to be her and willy's moment in the spot light?
I know slick is too slick to ever let his disappointment show like Hillary, so his outward demeanor cannot be used as an indicator either way.
There has been reports that the FBI and maybe the CIA had some clue that something was coming, but not the whens and wheres. Could the klinton's themselves had an idea of the when and the where, through their obvious close tie with Arafat and maybe other terrorist groups?
Could it be that something in the planning went wrong? The mission delayed? It might explain some strange happenings then, and now.

Somehow I suspect that this didn't happen on Clinton's watch because of deals that had been made between him and the terrorists. But I suppose I may be wrong.

Our local radio from OKC tonight for an hour ripped ms. clinton up one side and down the other. The host said that a hooker in Bricktown had more class and manners than ms. clinton. He was trying to get people to come up with explanations why she was so angry -- jealously seem to be the number one answer.
Wouldn't flame this thread -- I happen to believe you may be right.

I've been saying some of the same things. What we feared most in the waning days of x42 (national crisis, state of emergency, new powers for 'internal security', etc) have come to pass in the first months of Bush.
If this situation was a year ago, we'd all be screaming bloody hell...

It may be that Clinton thought he controlled the various unAmerican forces with whom he is allied, most notably China. But they looked upon him with contempt, and deliberately waited to attack till it was much too late to "help" him , simply to make their contempt palpable to him. And their contempt for what they perceived as Clinton's groveling may mean that they thought the US as a whole as pathetic as Clinton. Never forget, 4th century Rome thought of huge money payments to various nomad tribes as economic aid , while those tribes regarded the money as tribute and as a confession of weakness and inferiority.(Which is certainly what it became , if it was not so in the beginning.)
Another thing : Remember how happy and relaxed algore was after he conceded? Remember Gore and WJC chatting and laughing together ? That was widely commented on, here and at NM and FC. It was generally put down to Gore's relief at being through with politics : That he had been forced into running for the presidency and was glad it was all over. But is it possible that both men knew that things were going to 'go south' quickly ? Whether they anticipated a giant terrorist attack is debatable, but is it possible that they both had an inkling that the US was facing diplomatic and economic pitfalls in 2001... Pitfalls they had helped prepare, with the aim of creating anger against GWB, which would enable the 2004 democratic candidate to win the WH, or at the very least turn Congress over to a Democratic majority in 2002?
