Jailed Baylor grads' attorney trying to see them

Lawyer has visa to enter Afghanistan, but fleeing refugees clog path

09/21/2001

By LAURA HEINAUER / The Dallas Morning News

The Pakistani lawyer for the two Baylor graduates jailed by the Taliban government has obtained a visa to return to Afghanistan, but the visit is hindered by the exodus of refugees leaving that nation in fear of an American military strike, U.S. State Department officials said Thursday.

Dayna Curry, 29 and Heather Mercer, 24, who were both on trial early this month on charges of preaching Christianity in fundamentally Islamic Afghanistan, have not been in touch with family members or U.S. officials since Sept. 12 – a day after terrorists demolished the World Trade Center in New York and severely damaged the Pentagon in Washington.

Authorities suspect billionaire Osama bin Laden, a guest in Afghanistan, as the mastermind behind the attacks, setting the stage for possible U.S. reprisal.

State Department officials say that they have confirmation that the women were doing fine as of Tuesday but that their trial now seems to have been halted for reasons that remain unclear.

"There's no information coming to us on the progress of the trial," a State Department official said, noting that some judicial officials have been involved in discussion of whether to turn over Mr. bin Laden to U.S. officials.

"It's could be that the justices presiding over the case have been involved in the conference of clerics, and it's also possible that the trial has been put on hold because their [the two women's] lawyer hasn't been there to represent them. Either case, ... [the trial] doesn't seem to be ongoing at this time," he said.

Since Sunday all aid workers have been ordered out of the country. Ms. Curry's and Ms. Mercer's family members and U.S. consular officials moved to Islamabad, the capital of Pakistan.

The women's lawyer, who is from Pakistan but speaks Pushtu and is versed in Islamic law, is reportedly worried about his ability to drive in and out of Afghanistan's clogged roads during daylight hours.

"You can't drive into Kabul to do business and not spend the night," the State Department official said. "And spending the night in Afghanistan right now is not something a lot of people want to do."

Ms. Mercer and Ms. Curry are Baylor graduates from the classes of 1999 and 1993, respectively. They, along with six other foreign members of Shelter Now International, a German-based Christian group, are believed the only foreign aid workers remaining in Afghanistan. Under Taliban law, foreigners caught proselytizing face a jail sentence and expulsion from the country, while Afghan Muslims who convert to another religion or preach it face a penalty of death.

At the Antioch Community Church in Waco, senior pastor Jimmy Seibert said attendance at a 24-hour prayer vigil has picked up in the last several days.

A room in the church has been turned into a special prayer room for Ms. Curry and Ms. Mercer, complete with maps, pictures and news articles about the girls.

"It's not uncommon for five to six people to be there at three o'clock in the morning now," Mr. Seibert said.
For fair use.

Even CNN is now gone. Even the Afghan people are fleeing.
They have practically no one left...but Jesus will never leave them.

Do not forget them yourself.

Pray for the lawyers and those helping them also.

The fate of these girls has been worrying me. I wonder if those girls will ever make it home. However, why would they place the moslems to whom they were proselytising at risk of death? It is well enough for a christian to risk their own martyrdom, but those to whom they spoke of Christ were put in great danger. Those poor girls...did they know this?

We are all worried, or course. However, they were Humanitarian Aid Workers. They are on trial for proselytizing, but their "guilt" has not been determined. However, even the Taliban do not make it a crime for one of their citizens to have be talked to by a person who is espousing Christianity. If Heather Mercer and Dayna Curry were telling people about Jesus, then they placed themselves physically at risk, but it does not place a person they talk to at physical risk unless that person also accepts Jesus, a choice that also puts the Afghan at physical risk while saving his or her life for eternity. (Non-Christians have trouble with that last part, though.)

As a way of thinking about it, how would you feel about an American businessman visiting the USSR in 1965, "Radio Free Europe" days, who without permission started telling Muscovites, people who knew only Pravda, the real truth and beauty of the United States? Would you question 'why' the American was putting those poor Muscovites at risk? Or would you applaud the American's courage and feel American outrage if the Communists imprisoned the American for "impermissible speech?"

Because of how you do not seem to understand the possibility that these women were comfortable with and felt it proper to tell Moslems about Jesus, I think that you do not understand Christianity very well.

Do you not know that it is very, very common for Christians to go into life threatening situations so that they can tell people abut Jesus? It happens all the time all over the world. Christians believe that they are SAVING LIVES by telling others about Jesus. Christians believe that Jesus if the only way to eternal life. Christians believe that people who do not permit Jesus' sacrifice of His own life to cover their sins will not go to heaven.

But you know, one way or the other, we are only talking about the expression of words and ideas. The thought that someone cannot personally express simple words and ideas without being executed just grates on you when you're an American, doesn't it?

Appended are some verses from the Bible (NIV) that deal with life, and how Christians view life. This is only a sampling of "life" verses from only the 4 Gospels. There are many more verses dealing with life. The red words are spoken by Jesus. Christians believe that these words are literally true. If you understand this, then you will not be mystified when Christians follow the great commandment to preach the Good News of Jesus to all the nations of the world.

You are also in our prayers, Dudoight. Thanks for sharing concern about these women.

LIFE IN CHRIST

The prayers have been answered.

They are Free!
Praise
Jesus!

..."Today we've got incredibly good news," President Bush said after the aid workers were plucked from Afghanistan by military helicopters and taken to Pakistan. "Our United States military rescued eight humanitarian workers who had been imprisoned in Afghanistan."

..."Eight foreign aid workers, including two Americans, were safe in Pakistan Wednesday after being held in Afghanistan for three months by the Taliban for preaching Christianity, U.S. officials said.
Three U.S. special forces helicopters picked up the aid workers in a field near Ghanzi, about 50 miles southwest of Kabul, at about 4:40 p.m. EST, Pentagon officials said. The aid workers were flown to Pakistan, and appear to be in good health, officials said."

Thank God. Praise God. Praise Jesus. The release/rescue of these people is truly a miracle that only God, working through people, could have accomplished.

I have learned over the years that when the very thing happens that you have been praying for, you Thank God For It; and you acknowledge His answer to prayer; and you DON'T minimize it by saying that it just would have happened on its own.

I am sure this rescue will prove to be an interesting story in human terms, but it is even more momentous as a miraculous answer to the many, many prayers of many, many people. Thank You Lord!
