Complaint re: Professor Berthold
Self

Last Friday I responded to a post regarding a professor at the University of New Mexico who had applauded the bombing of the Pentagon. I wrote a short, to-the-point email to wgordon@unm.edu, the address given. Stupidly I used my real email address. I should know better. Since then I've received three emails with virus attachments. Probably most folks here are too smart to use their regular email address, but, just in case, a word to the wise...

Needless to say, update your antivirus program regularly.
Also, if you can establish who sent you the viruses, you might send a message to this fellow's department chairman and dean, politely informing them what happened and when. I doubt that they will fire him or anything dramatic like that, but maybe they will look at him with a more jaundiced eye next time his salary review comes round or he asks for some kind of favor.
They may think it's OK to be a traitor to your country, but it's not nice to infect people's computers.

well. you were sending your "real" e-mail address to a "real" email address. some reciprocity is expected. now, some of the viruses you are receiving could be automated -- as a vast majority of them are -- and you are being targeted just becuase you are in the infected inbox of some poor Micro$oft (l)user.

I was looking for a picture of Saddam and ran into a sight that gave me the NIMDA everytime I tried to access it.

Save those e-mails! They should be reported to your ISP and law enforcement authorities. In most states this is a felony and you can sue the sender for large civil damages. You might offer not to file criminal charges for say $5000 or so -- the approximate cost of the damages to data on your system and your valuable time. :)

Good idea, but I deleted them. If I get any more I'll do that. Of course I didn't open them so there was no damage. Thankfully I had that much sense.
