Clinton Looks to Define New Role Leadership: Crisis has brought former president back into the spotlight, creating some tension. By CHARLES ORNSTEIN Times Staff Writer
September 25 2001
NEW YORK -- Former President Clinton seems to be everywhere these days: at a memorial service with British Prime Minister Tony Blair; at a news conference with New York Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani; hugging rescue workers at the World Trade Center; comforting family members of victims; praying with 25,000 others at Yankee Stadium.
[MATERIAL OMITTED]
Clinton was in the middle of a two-week speaking tour in Australia when he learned of the attacks via a cell phone call. He tried to call Washington from his hotel, but was unable to get through. When he finally succeeded, Bush sent a military cargo plane to pick him up from Port Douglas in Queensland.

Why? Ex-Presidents merit the protection of the United States, but weren't there enough Secret Service agents in Australia? Wouldn't Clinton have been safe there?

It would of been a shorter trip to safety to his TRUE homland...

I think he was extending a gesture of goodwill because of the groundstop - not safety.

He should have been flown back allright, via Japan, via
Korea, via Diego Garcia, via Saudi Arabia, via Uzbekistan--

...and I have not heard a "Thank You President Bush!" yet!
..but then I didn't really expect to hear those words from the Coke-Head, Impeached Ex-President!

No. If the little SOB had been taken hostage or killed, we'd have to listen to dirges in his name for decades, just as we do with Kennedy. So it's best he keeps breathing. Better an icon of shame than a mythic, illegitimate martyr.

Bush should have left him there and told him that there were too many threats against air-space for him to fly for at least 4 days. Then told him that it was too dangerous for him to be out in public because of the threats to all in the government. Then what do you have? No Clinton in front of any cameras. Man I wish I was in charge of certain things up in D.C.. I would have left him there.
Strange how Britney Spears was stuck in the same city as well...hmmmmm.

Bush sent a military cargo plane to pick him up from Port Douglas in Queensland. For his safety, I assume.
I... I have nothing remotely Christian to say about that.

Bingo--W is all class, and he also knows that the Toon won't say one single word against him after that. I just love it when W treats his enemies with class- it makes them look all the worse!

I have nothing remotely Christian to say about that.Well, Dan, I don't either, so I'll say this:
When he finally succeeded, Bush sent a military cargo plane
Why a cargo plane? Hillary wasn't with him...

You have secret service agents and the US govt. babysitting reagan so why complain about clinton? Thanks for that intelligent response. Babysitting? You should be ashamed of yourself.

I had wondered how he made it back from Australia so fast - with no airlines coming into the U.S. For a while I actually thought: "THANK GOD CLINTON IS OUT OF THE COUUNTRY AND WE WILL NOT HAVE TO SEE HIM" - but, by Thursday he was already back.
BUT - I heard that W was working on a deal with the Aussies:
They could keep Clinton and we would have to keep the following: Paul Hogan (Croc Dundee)
Yahoo Serious (No, not the website)
Men at Work (come from the land down under guys)
and we also would have had to keep the surviving members of INXS.
But, alas, the deal fell through and Bubba is back.
the dingo ate your baby!

There was no question who won his elections. It's called landslide. Landslide? BWAHAHAH. He never even won a majority of the popular vote.

Remember what Clinton said when asked how he got back?
"I made arrangements to be flown back to the United States."
A real class act.
