Maher marred by misquote

For clarity, here is the full statement which does not appear in the article:

"We have been the cowards lobbing cruise missiles from 2,000 miles away," he said. "That's cowardly. Staying in the airplane when it hits the building, say what you want about it, it's not cowardly."

COLUMN: Maher marred by misquote

Cornell U.

(U-WIRE) ITHACA, N.Y. -- Like many of you, I don't watch "Politically Incorrect" very often. Heck, it goes up against a rerun of the Peabody Award-winning "Daily Show," not a tough choice in my book. So normally I don't tune in to "Politically Incorrect" and watch Cornell University's own Bill Maher, '78, lead roundtable, no-holds-barred discussions on current events. The show does not have a reputation for actually causing a current event, but last Monday, that changed. Maher might just have shown that our generation is headed for its own McCarthy-esque Red Scare.

On his Sept. 17 show, Maher talked about the recent terrorist attacks with his panel. One panelist said that the terrorist hijackers were warriors, not cowards. Maher agreed, "We have been the cowards lobbing cruise missiles from 2,000 miles away. That's cowardly."

For that statement, Politically Incorrect lost commercial sponsors and no longer airs in some parts of the country.

Irate viewers called the show's advertisers on Tuesday morning to say that Maher had called members of the American military cowards. A Houston radio station demanded "Politically Incorrect" be taken off the air. In a matter of days, KSFY in Sioux City, Iowa, KLKN in Lincoln, Neb., and WOI-TV 5 in Des Moines, Iowa, all yanked the show off their schedules. Sears and FedEx distanced themselves from Maher's viewpoints by pulling their commercials from the show. What the stations and advertisers inadvertently did was punish Maher for a misinterpreted statement.

A few days later, Maher clarified his stance. "I never meant to imply nor have I ever thought that our actual servicemen are cowardly... it's our government, it's our politicians, who have been cowardly in not letting the military do their job." Sounds like a reasonable statement that actually compliments the United States military. Yet Sears, FedEx, KSFY, KLKN and WOI-TV 5 are still sitting on the sidelines.

Now I completely disagree with anyone who calls American military personnel "cowards," but I respect the right to hold and share that viewpoint. So even if Maher meant to call members of the American military the c-word, I believe in the First Amendment and will let him speak his mind. And yet Maher is being punished for spreading that belief, a belief he says he does not even hold.

In other words, Maher is the victim of a witch hunt. This brings to mind a famous widespread bullying from just a few generations ago -- Joe McCarthy's character-destroying investigations of "communists" in the 1950s. Will America again shun those with dissenting opinions and jump to conclusions about those it fears?

It is our duty to stand by Maher, to stop people from running his character into the ground. Half a century ago, Americans stood idly by while Joe McCarthy ruined the reputations of countless people. The nation was concerned about communists, with good reason considering the unstable status of the world. McCarthy played on this fear for his own political gain, aggressively pursuing anybody he suspected might be a communist. The communist threat was real, but McCarthy overstepped the bounds of decency in his quest to defend America.

Could Maher's treatment be a warning sign for an impending repeat of the Red Scare? We as Americans must be careful that we do not turn our heightened defensive state into justification for the mistreatment of those different from us, either in background or in beliefs. Across the nation Arab Americans and Indian Americans have been assaulted because of their race. In Minnesota, three men of Middle Eastern descent were kicked off Northwest Airlines Flight 673 because of their ethnicity. Mosques and temples have been torched. Those unwilling to support an all-out assault on Afghanistan are treated like unpatriotic outsiders. How long until we roundup these "undesirables" and toss them into internment camps?

Bill Maher probably will not be thrown into an internment camp for his beliefs, or what others perceive to be his beliefs, but his situation raises questions we need to answer. Will we respect those we disagree with? Will we mistreat those of Arab-American descent? Will we prosecute and persecute those we are scared of?

The terrorists who attacked America hate us because of our freedom. We have the freedom to say what we want, to worship as we please and to disagree with each other without fear of reprisal. Unless we watch our step, history will repeat itself and our nation will rescind those liberties. Make no mistake about it, we are in a fight against terrorism, but more importantly we are in a battle to defend our way of life. And if we choose to revoke people's freedoms when we find it convenient, then we have already lost the war.

I disagree with the authors words "witch hunt" and "Joe McCarthy's character-destroying investigations of "communists". This is not the government or some mob threatening maher's life.

The fact conservatives must face is that the left has ruled activism for the last 40 years in this country. If conservatives had not raised their voices in Florida last November, gore would be president today.

Fire away.

Wonder what this Matt Flahive thought the same of John Rocker? I imagine not.

The Red Scare stuff is over the top, but I agree that the attack on Bill Maher is absurd. I can't stand the fellow, but I'm darned if I can see much to denounce in what he said. I even, to some extent, agree with it.

He should have said,

"We have been the cowardsClinton was a coward to have been lobbing cruise missiles from 2,000 miles away

while paying more attention to the young intern beneath his desk. That's cowardly."

Didn't Hanoi Jane make a statement along those lines in Vietnam?

The author is an idiot bolivious to history. McCarthy did this nation a great service with his hearings. A super majority of his claims and accusations proved to be true but this idiot can't let historical fact get in the way of little diatribe.

As was previously mentioned in this thread, what's happening to Bill Maher is public 'blowback' that is completely legal and ethical. As a fellow FReeper observed the other day, "I bet this [author] didn't make a peep when the militant gays went after Dr. Laura's show".

Some people think the IRS goes way too far - but they got Al Capone - and that's one case where I'm not going to quibble with how he went down. Same with Maher. He's been earning this for years - this is just the spark in the tinderbox.

Witch hunt? This is why our university system is in such a state of disrepair (for you in Palm Beach, that mean it sucks). Viewers and non viewers who are customers of sponsors told the sponsors that they did not agree with comment from a leftist supporter made on a television show that they supported with their advertising. Where's the government involvement in a witch hunt? Hell, for that matter where is the censorship? If ABC wants to spend millions on a show with 30,000 viewers nationwide it's their business. But if the sponsors don't want to lose money from a backlash and pull their advertising from a loser show, it sounds perfectly capitalistic to me. OH, I'm sorry, that's the problem. We're supposed to fund every piece of tripe that the LEFT wants on without question.

Maher's divisive, unfunny commentary and smug attitude have been a thorn in the side of many people for years. ANY negative or perceived negative comment about the military, at a time when they are about to go out to defend the country, was the excuse that people used to try to finally shut Maher up. ANY apology from Maher is seen for what it is--shallow and self-serving.

The red part of the map has spoken and maybe even some of the blue too in this case.

LOL, when I first saw this, I thought it said "Maher married mosquito". Not that a mosquito would have him or anything.

"I can't stand the fellow, but I'm darned if I can see much to denounce in what he said. I even, to some extent, agree with it."

If I felt M. had been talking about the commander in chief at the time, who was responsible for the shape our military actions took, I would agree with you. Perhaps I'm reading to much into his statement, but I "feel" (yuck) that he was really contrasting the behaviour of our servicemen versus the behaviour of the terrorists.

Furthermore, merely being willing to die for your cause does not, in my mind, negate accusations of cowardice- i.e. in my mind, a pustule on the anus of humanity who hunts down and kills his estranged wife and children, and then himself, is still a cowardly PotAoH. As were the terrorists who did this.

Will we respect those we disagree with?

Did this guy ask that of the homosexual activists who wents nuts trying to get Dr. Laura off the air? If he didn't, then he has no credibility in this matter.

I don't care if PI stays on the air or not. I never watch the show, and that's where the rubber should meet the road. The ratings go down, he's off the air. Instead of calling for the cancellation of the show, let's just encourange folks not to watch it!

Mr. Maher has his right to say whatever he wants to; however, just because he has the right to say it, there is no right for him to be heard. He can stand on a soapbox on any corner he wants, but when he takes to the public airwaves and makes money (from sponsors) for saying it, then we have a right to demand that those paying him stop it, or we will stop purchasing their products and/or services.

The point was made eariler in this thread that the "silent majority" has been re-awakened and it is time to be heard. It may be difficult to attack the anti-American sentiment being preached on our college campus, however, if we put up with this nonsense through the mass media, we do so at our own peril.

As I told you the other day, Maher (mare) deservedly got castrated. Sure he has the right to speak his opinion and when he does, he has to accept the consequences, eg his advertisers and some stations pulling out. His statement is pretty clear to me and I think most others who read it or who heard it -FOS.

Even more amazing however is the union of talking heads coming to his defense or giving him air time to try to save his sorry @$$ - Rush, O'Reilly (the common man - BS), Jay Leno and who knows who else. This guy is a flamer who has one token conservative guest for him and the rest of his guests to beat up on. Good riddance Maher you sorry f---! If you like I will tell you how I really feel. :-)
