Compassion will lead us on path to safety
To The Oak Ridger:
The terrorist attacks on New York and the Pentagon have made us feel unsafe. We would like to have something done to restore our feeling of safety.
We will not be made safe in the world by increased airport security, not even $40 billion of it. Our freedom and our safety will not be enhanced by giving away more of our power to the CIA and the FBI. A more authoritarian government will not keep us safe.
What will make us safe is something so hard to do that most people, myself included, will not be able to do it without the assistance of God. What is it that is so hard to do?
It is to extend compassion to the men who flew the aircraft into the buildings. I believe in my heart that as individuals, and collectively as a society, we must have compassion for these men.
They killed themselves and thousands of beautiful, innocent people. I can only imagine the level of pain that motivated them to feel that much anger and frustration. I do not know the source of their pain. I do not know why they perceived us as their enemy.
I feel that we had better find out why their supporters still hate us and begin to address the source of their pain.
We will be safe in the world when we are thought of as caring, compassionate people who conduct themselves in accordance with the principles upon which our government was founded.
For me, this means that we focus our attention on these simple precepts that were set forth by our founding fathers:
"We hold these Truths to be self-evident, that all Men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness ... ."
We have not lived up to these truths in our own country, not even in our own time, and we certainly have not done so abroad. The past is behind us. Today we can do better. If our present leaders cannot conduct our nation's business in accordance with these truths, then it is time to find more evolved leaders that can.
I do not want to see my grandchildren consumed as cannon-fodder in a stupid politicians' war of revenge.
I do not support our president. Nor do I support anyone else who wants to go out and kill and maim people in order to salve our nation's pride.
Charging out into the world on a mission of retribution and revenge will not make us safe. The violence we do in this world will come back to us in an even more horrible form.
Compassion is stronger than hate. Compassion will lead us on a path to safety.

I find it increasingly difficult to understand people such as this.
And his kind ALWAYS vote.

It's yo-yos like this that make Americans look like a bunch of sissies. This guy can in no sense call himself a real man. Real men don't act like that. His appeal to the Bible proves he doesn't have a clue as to what the Bible says. He confuses personal response to personal attacks with a nation's response to an attack on our nation. I'll bet he doesn't read much of the Old Testament or Revelation because it's got a lot of violence...
Maybe we could just get a signed document that the perps of this act of terrorism (no apologies to Reuters) will be nice now.
Compassion belongs to innocent victims. Justice belongs to U.S.

This from the liberal arts degreed newspaper EDITORS that form popular opinion. If I were his boss, he would have a pink slip tomorrow and could stand in the unemployment line with tens of thousands of airline workers who may not feel his brand of 'compassion.'
BTW, I think this piece is not a genuine letter from Joe Six Pack, but rather a great PR-urban legend stunt.
I mean it literally drips with sarcasm...
The truth of the matter is this attitude is prevailant in this county or rather the county is a Democratic party dominated county. Only two county elected officals I believe are GOP or even conservative the rest is Democratic with even factions inside of that that stand more libereal than others. I'm not that sure about the city government but I would guess more so.
The Democratic party they believe built the city in the WW2 era and are their protectors. It's harder than pulling teeth to convince them otherwise. Believe it or not many are as well career workers for DOD and Department of Energy defense projects who think as this.
Just because the majority is wrong doesn't make them right.
Somewhat true but not so much so in this county I'll explain why. It was one of the last counties in the state and probably the nation to stop school prayer and the pledge. I'm in my mid 40's. In grade school we were taken to the gym about twice a month and a preacher came in and read a Bible story to all of us.
The government influence in this case comes from several different parts of the counties history. In the 1930's TVA got the local economy going with Norris Dam. The government work camps were pretty common in this area. Another aspect is unions. The county used to have a good coal economy. Add the Department of Defense with the Manhattan Project and it's Unionization and the Department as being the areas major employer along with DOD contractors and that in turn still has a bunch of FDR faithfull Democrats in the county.
But the county also has a violent history as the high school was bombed when segragation was ordered. Up till 1980 the highschools in the county were small one of the principals being a preacher as well. We were not taught political correctness in school. From 1980 on when the high schools were consolidated and made bigger there you have a pretty good case.
Some of it can also come from people who have migrated into the area for these type jobs.
