Counter-TERROR: WORDS that can HELP America (attn: FoxNews)
Merriam-Webster OnLine Dictionary ^ | Sept. 29, 2001 | Me+ mostly Merriam & Webster

Journalists have a choice and a responsibility to the nation and the world to report facts accurately, and to use words carefully.

FoxNews has chosen "War on Terror." The viewing public sees Terror on the screen whenever they tune in and references to terror attacks continuously scrolling across the screen in their banner headlines. Let's get this straight, these were terrorists attacks, and this a War on Terrorism. I agree with the Marine who called in a few days ago and told the network that they were doing a disservice to the country by constantly focusing on fear and, at this crucial time in our history, using colorful and fear-inducing language expressed in doleful and dire emotional tones.
As a public service, and a plea to journalists everywhere to forget the ratings and help your country:

They know the words. They just use them, inappropriately, for the wrong side.

except Fox News, of course.

They'd have to shrink the font to fit "terrorISM" on the screen. "War on Terror" is newspaper headlinese.

The mainstream press may claim that truth is as flexible as the law and our "living document," The Constitution. They may pretend that allegations are legitimate news, and that we're too lazy or stupid to know when they're being lazy or careless, BUT we still have the another weapon against them. The other antonyms for fear are listed as contempt, and scorn.

FoxNews's "War on Terror" slogan stinks. "BITE ME, USAMA!" and "YO MOMMA! USAMA!" are inappropriate. Why not "Gathering Strength" or "America Prepares" - any constructive slogan that strikes the word terror from the screen.

WAR on TERROR = 13 spaces, but last week it was America United, 14 spaces, and they can control the size and spacing. We can do better than plaster the word TERROR across the screen all day, every day further worrying already shaky Americans. I grew up with an advertising pro so I'm slightly paranoid (^:.

We all know how an essay, a book, a speech can influence the public, but there is tremendous power to persuade in a single word or phrase repeated often enough. What if the crowd at a bridge in Seattle that day shouted at the suicidal woman, "Don't jump! Don't jump! Don't jump!"?

War on terror, yes, better. We're competing against their global PR campaign of "DEATH TO ALL INFIDELS!!". Perhaps we could also accidentally mis-spell a few names and mangle their slogans? (^:
