Million Mom March - Apr 2000 - Oct 2001 - Rest in Pieces (and a gloating shamless vanity editorial)
Shameless Vanity | October 1st | Dan from MI

Posted on 09/30/2001 10:36:19 PM PDT by Dan from Michigan

I know it's not nice to gloat, but the MMM is GONE. Their website is GONE. Today, the MMM officially is taken over by the Brady Campaign formerly known as HCI. The chief Anti Self-Defense lobby recently laid off 14 people, so we know how well they are doing. They also pulled out of the fight to derail Michigan's Shall Issue law. They can not win a ballot initative, so they decided not to fight this battle.

Now let's look at why this happened?

In 1994, there was a march at the state capitol in Lansing. 10,000 people were there. This was a pro-2a march, and most of the speakers were 'militia'. Next year, after OKC, they did not get nearly the same amount of people. The people there did not like the message. They didn't come back.

In May 2000, there was 2500 MMM'ers in Michigan's capitol. According to the MMM, 750,000 people were at the US Capitol. Let's just say that they DID have 750,000 people there.

In September 2000, less than 4 months after Mother's Day, there were 12-20 MMM'ers at Mackinac. From 2500 to 20 at most?

In October 2000's First Monday event, there was 25 at East Lansing. That's not that many. The NRA sold out in their tour in Michigan.

In November, unfortunatly, Michigan got Gored, but The nation didn't get Gored, and much of that had to do with GUNOWNERS.

In 2001, The MMM meeting in Novi had at most 60 people. That was their big Mother's Day rally. They cancelled the Lansing Rally!. MCRGO and SAS-Michigan drew over 300 in Lansing, and along with TN-USA and the local Barry County Group, drew over 400 at a Barry County rally. That's amazing, since Barry County is a small mostly rural and small town county in West Michigan

The MMM also laid off most of their staff and 'merged with the Brady Campaign. IT's all over, and the MMM leaves us with a whimper. Bwahahahahahahaah.

Now why? Why was this? I thought 2000 would be a referendum on guns with this new so called grass roots Anti Self-Defense Organazation. If that's the case, why did Bush win? Why did Scotty Baesler in Kentucky lose a congress race in a seat he represented for at least 2 terms. Why did NO PRO2Aer lose reelection in the Michigan Legislature, and the only incumbent to lose was fairly unreliable on the issue?

The bottom line is that if you believe the MMM's stat of 750,000 people, most of them didn't come back. They didn't like the message. That's why they no longer exhist!

On the other hand, MCRGO has over 21,000 members now, up from 3000 in Labor Day of 2000. The NRA has well over 4 million people. SAS is gaining membership and is alive and well. While they were ripped at down in DC from the Commie Mommies, they have the last laugh. They are still around. The MMM is DOA. The Liberty Belles are working out in California. The MMM is gone.

Since the MMM march in DC, Michigan has passed Shall Issue Conceal Carry and killed Laura Bairds ASD package. New Mexico has passed shall Issue. Ohio is on the brink of Right to Carry reform. Minnesota was one vote away. Democrats are being told to stop the ASD rhetoric.

However, it still isn't over. First Monday is trying to make a comeback. I don't it going anywhere, and the local MSU event is not advertised on the web. If I find it, I'll post it.

But we have to watch any stealth freedom grabs here in the name of terrorism. We also have to watch the McInsane-Feingold Campaign finance law aimed to shut us up, not to mention Jack Reeds Gun show ban, MCInsane-Loserman's gun show ban, and also any bills after the .50 caliber on the federal level. There is also the state level, where some states are still pushing ASD bills.

We all gotta be vigilant. The MMM was defeated. Brady is weakened. We still have a lot of work to do. People didn't like the MMM's message. Now we have to sell our message. We have to reach the middle. Gun Control=Hitler is good to preach to the choir, and while IS TRUE, is NOT the way to convince people. Even mentioning the 2nd amendment, won't convince the FENCESITTERS to come to our side, unless they have some strong libertarian views in the first place, and they are probably with us to begin with.

We have to sell the FACT that the ASD lobby is wrong, and that we are right. We have to sell that more guns is less crime. I've heard there are over 1 million gunowners in Massachusetts. There is also NO REASON that California should be in its current predictiment. At recently as 1994, dems did not consistantly win statewide. Most of what happened in Calfornia, happened over the last FIVE years. We have to sell our message to the gunowners out there that aren't as politically active as we are.

If we don't do this, we'll be in trouble 10 years from now, even in states like Michigan. We're starting to gain ground again. Let's finish the job.

Even mentioning the 2nd amendment,

Rephrasing. Using the 2nd amendment as the only part of the arguement.

Feel free to gloat, friend. And celebrate, but we must also remember to remain ever vigilant.

But if they did, that means that that many more people heard the message....and didn't come back the next year. :)

Agree with you on the "Gun Control=Hitler" thing, its meaning is lost on the newer generations. But I've got news for you -- don't discount the choir, it needs preaching to. Just think about what would happen if every gun owner across this country took his/her rights seriously enough to get out and vote in every election, or to write the letter or make the phonecall to the congresspeople. Gun owners have the numbers to be a force, they just need more like you, who are willing to do more than just send in their NRA dues every year. How do you reach them?

In the case of the gunowners or the passive members of pro-2a groups, we have to convince them that voting makes a difference, and that YES, the ASD politicians out there like Jenny Grandstand(Our AG) really want to take away our freedoms.

And that means going to all those sportsmen clubs and speaking before them. That's one of the biggest things we do with MCRGO. We go to the clubs and the gunshows. That's where we started.

One of the ploys that the anti's use is to take the whole and break it up into parts which they turn against eachother. Gun owners have been broken up into sports shooters, hunters, and self defense shooters. I know there are hunters and sports shooters who value their 2A right, but I also know there are those who think that their 2A right is secondary to their pursuit of a pasttime. These are the people who will end up hurting gun owners, because if push comes to shove they'd give up their hobby rather than be inconvenienced. It's a very very frustrating problem. Maybe the fencesitters WOULD be easier!

I've been reading reports from around the country to the effect that stores are selling out of their guns in recent days, after the Sept. 11 attacks.

Yep! This is why their was so little resistance to the 1994 "Assualt Weapons" ban! Many hunters (wrongly) believed that the 2nd Amendment guaranteed the right to hunt and figured there was no need for "military-styled" weapons. I knew many hunters who looked with contempt at my collection of guns and asked me why I would need something like that?!?!

It is fellow gun owners who's complacency has allowed many of these gun laws to pass. And when their 30.06 with a scope becomes a "military-style sniper rifle" they will be partially to blame.
