We want our lives back.

We want our lives back. We want OURSELVES back.

Walking around with teeth clenched, grinding them together at night in our sleep, we don't realize until we try to speak that we're actually straining our own jaw muscles. No longer patient as we were the first week or so after 9-11, we find ourselves irritable and even angry at small annoyances. Our sense of humor has changed--if it's not bloody and directed at terrorists, it's not funny.

Loud noises more than just startle us. And every day's ambiguous and scary news makes us want to tape all the doors and windows and just hide in bed until forced out for food. We find ourselves defending our pet theories with an almost bloodthirsty passion, while some of our most cherished beliefs may be shaken from their foundations. Maybe we're ready to commit or encourage actions we would never have endorsed before 9-11.

Friends and family have lost jobs. Maybe some friends and family have lost lives. We feel robbed and violated. More than that, some people are standing, virtually on the graves of dead heroes and innocents, to chant hateful slogans that attempt to assign the blame for this to the very aspects of our country we hold dearest.

Maybe some of us, blessed with above-average attention spans, are able to focus on our work. Others find their attention wandering from even the most vital projects. We have to tear ourselves away from our children in the morning to go to work or to see them to school. And some of us, full of anguish and fury, flock along in the search for gas masks, preparedness information, gold coins, and scripture that helps us to understand the frightening new world.

Some of us look upward at a tall building before we enter, and wonder if it will be coming down onto our frail earthly bodies like a house of cards, brought down by the incomprehensible hatred of someone whose hand we may have shaken in business or friendship.

These things were done to us, and not by some computer glitch or act of common human greed. We believe that as Americans we deserve to keep what we've earned. We have given so much to the world. If there's an earthquake we send aid. If there's financial collapse, we forgive loans, loan more. There are few among us who wouldn't donate bone marrow to an Afghan kid with cancer, yet their leaders DID THIS to us. We're as bewildered as any humans in history.

But we are mainly literate, and we've read history. We know what we have is precious and to a large degree holy. We gave flight to the world. We gave the internal combustion engine to the world. We gave the concept of vaccinations to children worldwide. Many agricultural innovations, and almost all aspects of modern life were born here! From all over the world, men and women come to learn from us. WE WILL NOT TOLERATE that knowledge being turned against us. We've had enough. We want our lives back. Our innocence cannot be returned to us, but we will fly again without fear, ride buses without fear, visit tall buildings without fear. I am sorry that we must beseige a very troubled people, but when the Taliban has refused our demands too long, and the bombs have rained down to protect our people, we will then rain bread upon the heads of their people, and they will rise up, and let us in. We know that the people imprisoned in burqas and forcibly drafted away from starving children will be glad to see us. We will cut off the heads of their oppressors one by one, and free the world again.

They made this personal; we all feel this to the very fiber in the muscles of our jaws. It's time. If we could all walk there and walk through that land we'd clean their house for them. Since we can't, we are waiting for W. to do it. And I myself don't want to wait very much longer.

Mr. Bin Laden: Go Directly to Hell. We've got your ticket, and we guarantee that the security isn't going to let you bring anything in that will help you now.

If you're still mad, still not sleeping, still playing BIN LADEN LIQUORS with keen attention to the score, post your feelings here. Most of the other threads on FR are way too specific--anthrax here, crashed plane, idle speculation and the opinions of domesticated columnists. No one knows what is spin, what is accident, and what is conspiracy. I know I don't want my anger to smoulder under a heap of uncertain debris. I'm ready to build and launch my own missile!

I take a different approach. We walk softly....and we carry a BIG stick. Ask the Japanese. They bloodied us and we did litte for a year. 4 years later, we dropped Hell's Full Fury on them.

We are through talking. Now we go to school.

This should make you laugh. On the 11th I was mowing the yard. When I heard the news on a neighbors radio I came inside and started watching the news, calling family, and logged on to FR. I have not got back to finish mowing the yard. I have half a yard mowed. (I think things have started to live in the grass!) I plan go back and finish mowing it tomorrow. If something bad happens tomorrow I plan to sell the lawn mower.

I'm with you. I'm sometimes even surprised myself at how ugly some of my posts have been lately...ashamed as well. But I'm filled with anger and have no real outlet for it other than ranting here...I feel so damned useless. My country has been attacked and it seems that we're all just sitting around on our hands waiting to see what happens next and I want to shoot something. NOW!

These pigs that attacked America have unleashed unholy hell and we'll make it rain all about their heads...I just hope my blood pressure lets me stay around to see it happen.

a group of us are going to the desert to shoot rifles this weekend.
i volunteered to put usama pictures on the sillhouettes, and maybe a few pumpkins.

We want our lives back. We want OURSELVES back.

I agree. I'm afraid that we will never get our old lives back ... Sometimes I wonder if this is an enemy that we can identify and eradicate or if he will too ellusive.

I am on a diet. I have a big bag of Frito Scoops, a can of rotel tomatoes and chilies, and a pound of Velveta cheese. I plan to eat every bit of it while watching the action when it starts. And if we only get small snippets of coverage, I'll just record it and play back over and over.

Who'd have believed that someone on the other side of the world could make us leave a lawn half-mowed? Or make us cringe when an airplane goes by?

Myself, I live near an Air Force base and a decent sized airport, so something is almost always in the air. On 9-12, it was the empty and silent skies that filled me with the most immediate rage. What a privilege to be one of a people with wings. How dare they clip them?

I had more than enough on my plate before 9-11. Most of us do. I don't know a single soul who has no troubles of his or her own. None of that stuff went away. Yet it's all buried like Pompeii. All of us have trouble even getting to the things that mattered before. CathyRyan, your half-mowed lawn is a great symbol of what has been done to us.

I'm not sure that revenge is best served cold; I think that's a convenient and pat expression, and that's all. When a puppy has just looked you straight in the eye and peed on your new $140 shoes, you don't wait for him to eat and take a nap before you do something about it.

You all don't think anything bad will happen tomorrow? It has been a week since I have started to try to go back and finish the yard and I can not make myself do it. I know it's silly.
