Iron `Cross' Found at Ground Zero
By SHANNON McCAFFREY, Associated Press Writer
NEW YORK (AP) - A cast iron ``cross'' found in the rubble of the World Trade Center has been adopted by rescue workers as a symbol of faith and blessed with holy water by a Franciscan priest.
The 20-foot tall cross, consisting of two metal beams, fell intact from one of the twin towers into a nearby building.
Laborer Frank Silecchia, 47, found the cross standing almost upright two days after the towers toppled Sept. 11.
``Some people will say it's velocity or physics that put it there. To me it's an act of God,'' said Silecchia, who cried for 20 minutes after his discovery.
Since then rescue workers have made pilgrimages to pray or meditate near the cross. Some etch messages on it. ``God Bless Our Fallen Brothers,'' reads one tribute.
On Wednesday, workers hoisted the cross atop a 40-foot high foundation, formerly a pedestrian walkway. Construction workers, firefighters and police officers stood quietly by as the Rev. Brian Jordan blessed it with holy water.
``Behold the glory of the cross at ground zero,'' Jordan said. ``This is our symbol of hope, our symbol of faith, our symbol of healing.''
The workers prayed and sang God Bless America together before returning to work.

``Some people will say it's velocity or physics that put it there. To me it's an act of God,'' said Silecchia, who cried for 20 minutes after his discovery.I would've been much more impressed had everyone in the towers survived their collapse.
Now that would've been an ACT OF GOD!

Maybe so. But do you know Christ and accept Him as your personal savior? That's the important thing.

I do not think it's a "cast iron" cross.... it would be steel.... besides calling it a "cast iron" cross sounds a little to "Germanic" to me

Ever hear the saying...you're so smart your stupid??....in your case I believe its just arrogant pride....God have mercy on your soul......

I am offended by your comparison. This does look like a cross. Those workers are digging day after day knowing that they will not find any more survivors. They work among the fumes of the fires that still burn and the stench of death. They are finding some bodies fairly intact, but mostly dismembered body parts, and they know that this is what faces them day in and day out for months to come. I can't even imagine what they must be going through during their waking hours, because it's worse than any nightmare I've ever had.
That cross is a reminder of their Christian faith. It is a reminder of life after death, and they need that reminder because they are surrounded by death.

I see someone let you out again, Illbay. Go crawl back under your rock and leave the nice humans alone.

This cross was not just orthogonal, but the right proportions as well.

It seems that this section of framing fell to earth and impaled itsself upright, looking much as the cross would have looked on Golgotha.
While you may not feel the need for reassurances from God that he is still there, these men do. Their lives have been changed forever, and I hope that their faith never fades. I hope that you find faith under more pleasant circumstances than these men did.
We would all like to die at a ripe old age. Preferably between clean sheets. Surrounded by loving family, and painlessly as possible. These men are surrounded by the remains of thousands who died young, suddenly and horribly. Please don't ridicule their coping mechanisims

The photo shown reminds me of the apes prostrating themselves before the Monolith in the opening scene of 2001: A Space Odyssey.Glad you got your jollies out of it.
So when are you going to be volunteering to dig thru the rubble and mass grave there?

has been adopted by rescue workers as a symbol of faith Who will be the first to complain about how insensitive this is to those of other faiths?
To: Illbay
Illbay, I don't believe in "seeing" things all the time either......like faces in clouds, you know, stuff like that.
What concerns me is your arrogance towards the Christians who DO see this (duh) as a CROSS!!!! Is it "The" Crosss that Jesus died on? No. Was it put there for a reason? I'd put money on it, if that's how things worked, in a spiritual sense. And, what really concerns me, is your wanting to make light of God. Why, I ask you, are you so very angry towards Him?

I SEE IT NOT AS A SIGN BUT A SYMBOL OF A PEOPLE WHO BELEIVE IN MIRACLES OF A GOD THAT IS GOOD AND FAIR
KEEP THE FAITH FREEPERS

The only adjective that describes your sentiment is "CRUDE".
