As Rep. Gary Condit revs up his bid for re-election, a new poll shows he would lose in a race against any of the three state lawmakers he could face.

The survey was conducted last week by J. Moore Methods of Sacramento and paid for by Assemblyman Dennis Cardoza (D-Atwater). Cardoza was once Condit's aide and protégé, but is now a likely opponent in the March primary. If the election was held immediately, the poll showed Cardoza would garner 56 percent of the vote to Condit's 27 percent. Cardoza's staff provided the poll results to the press.

The poll also shows Condit would lose against Sen. Jim Costa (D-Fresno), a man who is not well known in Condit's district. The poll had Costa winning a hypothetical primary election by a margin of 43 percent to 36 percent.

The popularity of a Republican candidate considered likely to run was also surveyed. The poll revealed that in a general election match-up with Condit, Sen. Dick Monteith (R-Modesto) would pull in 55 percent of the vote to Condit's 32.

The results echo a Field Poll released last week showing a majority of potential voters view Condit unfavorably and would not re-elect him.

The poll was conducted via telephone on September 25 and 26 with 500 likely voters in the recently redrawn 18th Congressional District . The poll has a margin of error of 4.5 percentage points

They may have made the "centrist" district more liberal, but it still not enough to make the majority take the weasel over a Republican. RUN GARY RUN!!!

All the republicans there (depending on who else is in the primary) should vote for Condit in the primary, and then take him out in the general.

IMO, Condit will now do as well as Geoff Fieger.

Hopefully, he'll have enough challengers to dilute the vote and give him the nomination, so a Republican can take the seat.

Does California have open primaries now? When I lived there, you could not "cross over" in the pprimary and vote in the other party. They may have changed that rule since I moved.

In Texas, "crossing over" in the primary to help choose a weak candidtate for the opposing party was great sport! In my town, Democrats and Republicans voted at the same polling place and you could watch the voters come in the door and place bets as to which line they would choose!

Assemblyperson Dennis Cardoza

He's almost as corrupt as Condit, isn't he?

I'm not sure. Michigan is open primary, but split ticket primaries are NOT allowed. That means I can vote dem governor, but I'd have to skip all the other races. Unfortunatly where I vote, that means I skip the elections since Livingston County is a one party area.
