Today's NY Times has a long article about the peace protest yesterday in NYC...very 70's era in it's feel, and it devoted two small paragraphs to the counter-demonstrators. (Freepers?)Really good comments....so would you guys please recognize yourselves.....I've extracted the two relevant paragraphs..

"....About 50 counter demonstrators followed the marchers, holding up placards that read "Traitors: Welcome to New York" and other slogans. A number of cars honked and held up traffic, responding to to signs reading "Honk if you love America!" One man held up a sign reading "Smile! You're starring in the next Taliban propaganda film." "........

But others, following the marchers, expressed another view.

"There's 5,000 people down their in the rubble. and they want justice," said James E. Bancroft, a former Marine. He carried a sign declaring "Peace is one Pentagon; one U.S.S. Cole, two embassies, and two towers too late."

I did a search and didn't see the article posted....

Oh, BTW, another gem from today's Times.....in the article written by a correspondant aboard the Enterprise, talking about the launch of the strike..he described how the excited seamen had all crowded up on the "observation deck", of the carrier, to watch the strike aircraft launch....Now, I always knew the Navy had it cushy (g), but the carriers have observation decks....what about the saunas?.....be nice if the paper assigned someone who knew a little bit about the military......and oh yeah, today's NY Daily News caption a picture aboard the Enterprise, as " a Navy soldier helps launch a plane........that's one for the books.....designed to annoy everyone in the military...(g)

Great find, Ken! And mega-dittos to what that Marine said..."Peace is one Pentagon; one U.S.S. Cole, two embassies, and two towers too late." - Now if we could just get the damn press to stop trotting out folks like Bill Richardson as experts...I wanna throw things everytime is bad hair pops up on the screen. Richardson, Albright, Clintons and friends are culpable in all this mess...

I read the article and I am astonished--there were nowhere NEAR the 10,000 peaceniks reported in the NY Times! I was THERE yesterday. If there were 500 people total, I'd be extremely surprised.

I think the reporter spoke to a policeman who said they had been told to expect10,000 people, and the reporter left it at that. At the beginning there were scads of cops, police vans, and stacks of blue barricades that were not used. As the rally went on, many of the vans and cops went elsewhere. When the marchers left Union Square, they sure weren't a traffic-blocking mass either; there weren't enough of them.

I repeat, there were most definitely NOT 10,000 people at the peace rally. It's an outrageous lie.

The "one Pentagon; one U.S.S. Cole, two embassies, and two towers too late" sign belonged to Race Bannon.

How many peaceniks really showed up? What did the cops really say?

According to the New York Times, "The crowd was seven city blocks long and ultimately swelled to close to 10,000 people, the police said."

http://www.nytimes.com/2001/10/08/nyregion/08PEAC.html

According to the New York Daily News, "Demonstrators marched from Union Square to Times Square to protest any move toward war. Organizers said 7,000 people participated, while cops put the number at 1,000."

http://www.nydailynews.com/2001-10-08/News_and_Views/City_Beat/a-127786.asp

According to the New York Post, "As the U.S. military was hitting Afghanistan with missiles and bombs, several thousand protesters gathered yesterday to make a plea for peace."

Looks like the Times is engaged in Million Man March Math.

OOOPS There is a observation deck on the Big E. Used to go up there too watch night ops. Being a snipe (Reactor Operator) it was fun to get off watch and go up there to see night launches.

holding up placards that read "Traitors: Welcome to New York"

That one was mine :) Wish I could take the credit, but a DC Freeper told us of a "Welcome, Traitors" sign at their anti peace rally, and I just localized the flavor.

"Honk if you love America" was KLT's hubby- didn't catch his screen name.
