I was just responding to a thread that suggested offing families of terrorists. Not sure if it was deleted because of word usage, or because of political correctedness. IMO, it deserves discussion. If we can go in, risk lives of OUR men & women, and innocent lives over there, the least we can do is discuss whatever it takes to rid us of the scourge of this evil. Destroying the families of terrorists (either financially or physically) just might be a good deterrent.
Anyway, this was my response to the original suggestion:
Isn't it true that the terrorists believe they bring honor to their families if they die in suicide missions? Perhaps this belief would be shaken, if terrorists knew their entire families would be destroyed also.
I read somewhere (an article posted here, I think) that the vast majority of Kamikaze pilots, really joined the ranks because if they refused, it would bring dishonor and total ruin to their families. Isn't it true that the Taliban also recruits by force (ie: threatens to kill families if recruitment is refused)?
Heard a caller on a talk show suggest that the families of terrorists should be finacially ruined. I know many are dirt poor to begin with, but not all. Some of these guys are from wealthy families. Kick families out of their homes and sieze their assets. This is war. And if that doesn't work, kill them. It's either us or them.
This is the methodology of a Stalin, not a Washington or Jefferson. It is also not quite the effective tool that you suggest. Many of the terrorists are rebels. Many may in fact be motivated by hatred of their own families.
We do not need to surrender basic decency--or our code of ethics--to win this war.

I imagine this one won't last long, but personally, I took offense to the targetting of children.
I don't know about the rest of you, but this goes against everything I believe in.

They are those that have no regard for the innocent, embodied in children.
We are not them.
Perhaps it's time for a far reaching evaluation of our perogatives.
As I have suggested in a draft article, War 2001! The Shortest Path To Victory, we should focus on the Internationalist brigand aspect of the enemy. What those who want to adopt Stalinist tactics are suggesting, would only fuel the recruiting of a whole new generation of terrorists on University campuses, across North Africa and Asia.
What you suggest would greatly increase the number of people in the world who would make your children a target. It would also be something that would haunt your children and grandchildren's image of their own civilization for a lifetime. This is not the way to respond.

It's also time for a definition of our objectives. We've handled these people with kid gloves for decades. We've shipped them food and endowed them with largesse. We sent them weapons to oppose a Soviet invasion. We've contributed demining personnel. We looked aside when many of their governments nationalized petroleum industries that had been built at the expense and labor of westerners. We've taken in their immigrants, graciously offering them jobs and educations. We've sacrificed American lives in Lebanon, Somalia and Bosnia to protect them from their own repressive regimes and medieval warlords, and tried to help them bring order to their chaotic, miserable lives.
They showed us their gratitude on 9/11.
As disturbing as the images of the WTC were, I was more disgusted by the images of Palestinian children dancing in the streets celebrating the death of your and my fellow Americans.
While I've long repressed the thought, at that moment, it became obvious to me that these people only understand brute force and ignorance. If that is how we must communicate with them, it is because they refuse to accept the more civil means of communication we have attempted for at least 50 years now.
In the kind of war our enemy has chosen, we would do far better to study the likes of Quantrell, Sherman, and Francis Marion. I would hope that we would commit ourselves to such tack before you and yours suffer the pains of Tabun, Sarin, Anthrax, Smallpox, Lewisite, airliners, carbombs, bubonic plague or any other means of death our enemies would not have the slightest hesitation in using against us, given the opportunity.
Well, I suppose if my children and grandchildren are killed by these nuts they
won't have to worry about negative self-image problems.
If terrorists know that their families will be killed if they commit terrorist acts,
then it is on their heads, their choice I would feel regret, but no compunction, hesitation or guilt.
That's Conaan's advice.

Undoubtably, many of these people dancing have extremely successful relatives living in the USA. Your point is not lost on me.
Yes, but NBC still didn't give him Leno's slot.
Me too. Try to resist it.
