FreeRepublic: Changes in Style Sheets

Posted on 10/14/2001 3:18:53 PM PDT by John Robinson

Attention those with custom style sheets: you will want to revisit your settings to enter a URL to your style sheet; you can now use a style sheet saved on your local computer, or choose one of the predefined style sheets I have made available.

Thanks for all the hard work you do for this great site. I've got one question about all the new changes. Is it still possible to view all the replies at once, instead of 1 - 50, 51 - 100, etc? Just curious, thanks again.

I love it John. I have Webtv & can get to the end of long threads now without getting that dreaded 'this page is too big' notice. ;9)

Ok, I missed it. I can view 250 at a time, I think that is enough. Sorry about that, I should've looked at the settings more. Thanks!

All these options -- I feel like a kid in a candy store! Thank you so much. I'm still thrilled about the little notification trick with the bells!

John,

I'm dense! How do I specify a URL for a style sheet on my computer? Can I just specify a file?

PS. All three of your example style sheets work on my Mac using Netscape 4.77

When the software stabilizes I'm going to create a template for WebTV users, tailored specifically for WebTV.

I would also like to create a template for web phones, PDAs, etc, as soon as I get my hands on one!

I missed that one, been away. What is it and how does it work? Thanks

Hrm. I must be having terrible luck then, I can't get Netscape nor Opera to display those last two style sheets. The only thing which takes is the BODY background, which completely trashes everything else.

You can specify a style sheet on your computer by using the file: scheme. Netscape and MSIE handle this differently. And Windows and Macintosh surely treat this differently.

You can get the URL for your style sheet saved on your computer by dragging the style sheet into your browser's window. The URL for the style sheet will display in the address bar. Copy that URL and paste it into the URL field for the Styled setting.

If you can save the style sheet to your local hard drive, you can modify it to your dark heart's content. The URL for the style sheet can be found by going to the Styled setting and grabbing it from the text field at the bottom.

This has nothing to do with css...I noticed that the new self search has no way to go directly to the post in question, unlike the old self search, or am I missing something?

What I see with NS on my Mac is more than likely what your style sheet is defining. The marble one is pretty neat, and the dreary one is.... well, dreary. My only gripe with them is the font size. Too small for these 50+ year old eyes.

I'm off to try the URL trick you gave me :-}

The styled template you are using is a little brain damaged. It has been lagging in development, I plan on bringing it up to speed tonight.
