Members of Congress Should Undergo Security Checks, Lawmaker Says

(CNSNews.com) - Upset over the leaks of classified information by some of her congressional colleagues, Rep. Sue Myrick (R-N.C.), a member of the House Rules committee introduced legislation Monday requiring all members of the House to undergo a security clearance. "There must be accountability for leaking sensitive information that could cost American lives. This is a new chapter in history for all of us. Members of Congress need to be informed, but leaking information has the potential to put our troops at risk. We have to do everything in our power to make sure it never happens again," said Myrick in a statement on Capitol Hill. Her resolution would require all members of the House to go through the same security clearance procedures as required by members of the House Intelligence Committee. Only after receiving a security clearance would members be allowed to view classified documents and attend classified briefings. Full Story To Follow.

It's ridiculous that people getting top secret info don't have to pass what any of us would to view the same!

But these are the same clowns who write laws for everybody else & then exempt themselves, too....

Something that really surprised me when taking a week long Congressional Operations course on Capital Hill a couple of years back is that Congress people do NOT have to pass a clearance.

What's to prevent someone being planted in a small district in an obscure location with plenty of campaign funds and getting elected?

Thats the best you can do? Condit would be investigated? There ain`t no doubt in my mind that members of Congress have been selling out our country and US for years and the only way they could do it is if wqe let them. It`s time for it to stop>

IIRC, Clinton granted background security check waivers to about half of his incoming White House staff. Seems they wouldn't have passed otherwise. It's depressing to realize that Clinton himself would NEVER have passed a military background check (drugs, foreign visits, Arkancide, draft-dodging, etc.), yet he became Commander-in-Chief and was privvy to (almost?) every level of security. No wonder all those secrets leaked out during his tenure.

You tell 'em Sue. Proud to say that Sue is from my neck of the woods -- Charlotte, NC. She was our mayor before Vinroot.

hmmm.... considering the situation we are in since 9-11, I wonder if there could be a requirement to pass a security clearance check for EVERY public office. Now would be a good time to try it!

Any resistance is further evidence of their extra-Constitutional citizenship. If we'd just hang a Title on them like 'Esquire' or 'Representitave' or 'Senator' then we might be able to get 'em under Article I 9:8a of the Constit...Oh, wait! It is Senator Finestine et alii that want to disarm everyone else. Yo, DiFi! What about it? Still just a citizen? I didn't think you'd think so. Officer, do your duty.

About freaking time! The military folks have to have top secret clearence to keep their jobs. Heck, some civilians must have security clearence in order to keep their jobs. Why are these people so special? I'm glad. Hey does that mean Hillary won't have clearence?

This has been long overdue! If you go to work for the Government, you have to fill out long forms to get a Top Secret clearance, go through an exhaustive background check, and have an updated clearance every five years. Now why shouldn't those same rules apply to members of Congress?

Bet we might be surprised at what turns up! Just think ms. clinton required to submit to a background investigation!

We need to notify our Members of Congress that we support this change to the Rules!

A bit too light.

What not a real law. Any member of the US Government who leaks classified information shall be tried for treason against the United States of America.

If Congressmen cannot control their own mouths or their staffs, they don't need to be Congressmen. Too many dedicated military personnel are putting their lives on the line--facing real bullets and possible death. So, if a Congressman/Congresswoman is so irresponsible, he or she should be treated accordingly.

This sounds great... but - what do we do about term limits and the information that congressmen would bring with them when they depart office? (I'm talking about the "if I tell you, I'd have to kill you" sort of information.)

The vast majority of civilian positions in DoD require at least a Secret clearance and others in the Pentagon and subordinate commands/organizations require a Top Secret clearance with 5-year updates to keep your job.

When you leave Government Service with a Top Secret clearance you are debriefed and have to sign a paper saying that you will not divulge any information you received while in your job under penalty of a felony prosecution.

Great idea, but it'll never fly. Expect this one to die on an unpublicized vote if it ever reaches the floor.

Too many congresscreatures would never pass scrutiny. I mean, come on: Barbara Lee, Condit, Barney Frank, Teddy Kennedy... even Orrin Hatch. Far too many skeletons in far too many closets. Won't happen. Hope I'm wrong, but won't happen.
