Bush Links Terror Attacks to Trade Bill

By THE NEW YORK TIMES

TRAVIS AIR FORCE BASE, Calif., Oct. 17 — President Bush used the terrorist attacks today to press for a quick vote on new authority to negotiate trade agreements without allowing amendment by the Senate.

"The terrorists attacked the World Trade Center, and we will defeat them by expanding and encouraging world trade," Mr. Bush said, seeming to imply that trade was among the concerns of terrorists who brought down the towers. "In order to help me expand world trade, I've asked the Congress to give me what's called trade promotion authority — the ability to seek America's interests around the world."

Opponents of the bill, which would limit Congress to approving or denying accords, say Mr. Bush is trying to force it through by wrapping it in the attacks, even though the connection is tangential at best. The strategy came from Robert B. Zoellick, the United States trade representative, who began making the argument soon after Sept. 11.

Too bad bush can't fast track getting illegals and terrorists out of this country.  That would be Constitutional.  Fast track trade isn't.

How convenient to use the disaster to forward the free trader agenda.

King, being king wouldn't matter...that title would still leave him below the Emperor of the Sink, Bill Clinton.

W please do not use the WTC attack as an excuse to by-pass our constitution on trade matters. Many Americans including myself do not support this bill and we do not consider ourself terrorist either for not supporting it. Your choice of words on this matter was not the greatest. This bill is not related to the WTC attack or terrorist. Please do not try and pass it off as such.

JH? Remember the power of the protestors in Seattle and Zurich? If this terrorism is homegrown and there definitely are renegade extremist protestors, could this all be leading to them? What is the common denominator between the media, Daschle and Gates in the WTO stand?

The thing is, I don't believe it's "home grown": The letter from Malaysia mailed to Microsoft's branch office in Colorado suggests foreign terrorists.

But JH, Microsoft isn't even be mentioned in the same breath with NY, DC and Fla. And when we had one of the most serious pc viri, wasn't it from kids in the Phillipines? BTW wasn't the Microsoft thing in Nevada, whats the Colorado connection? My bet is the CIA is still somehow in this. And the news seems to also be following the trend of domestic terrorism, I always believed it was for many reasons from letter one. Just MHO(shrug)
