Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld smiles during a Pentagon news conference Thursday. Rumsfeld said Thursday U.S. airborne broadcasts and leaflet drops inside Afghanistan have scored some successes in encouraging Taliban fighters to defect or surrender.
