[history]
Lucent Technologies develop molecular-size transistor Scientists yesterday reported the creation of the world's first molecular-scale transistor, a tiny device that could push the miniaturization of electronics to the threshold of its final frontier. The research team, from Lucent Technologies' Bell Labs, used a technique called "chemical self-assembly" to cover a pair of minuscule gold electrodes with a single layer of carbon-based molecules.

Is this the first entry into nanotechnology? Hope Lucent has enough cash to survive.

I predict that nanotech will be the final weapon of choice against viruses and cancers. The ability to artificially enhance the human immune system is within our reach in this century. It will be the ultimate defence against bio-terror (among other benefits). But it's not for this decade, and maybe not for the next. In the meantime, we have to use more conventional means to keep our health up (good diet, exercise, etc) and to keep our population safe (
send potential terrorists home, for example).

I get it now. It's an implanted solid-state cell phone that you use by placing your pinky in front of your mouth and your thumb in your ear??
