Last night amid honks and chants, a young woman stood at the foot of St. Paul’s Cathedral, a solemn expression on her face. In her raised hand she held a wire clothes hanger and other hangers littered the sidewalk behind her. “The hanger represents the way women induce abortions when they don’t have access to adequate health care,” said La’Tasha Mayes, legislative director of the Pitt group Students for Reproductive Freedom.
At a rally and candlelight vigil last night, Students for Reproductive Freedom teamed with the Campus Women’s Organization for a memorial to women who died as a result of illegal abortions.
The rally coincided with the sixth annual National Young Women’s Day of Action, a nationwide event designed to focus attention on women’s reproductive options and rights. The day commemorates the death of Rosie Jimenez, a college student who died as a result of an illegal abortion.
“We’re not here because we’re anti-church or anti-life,” Mayes said. “We’re here to reiterate that no one has a right to tell women what to do with our bodies.”
Young women and a handful of young men lined Fifth Avenue in front of St. Paul’s waving signs and chanting slogans such as “honk if you’re pro-choice.”
The two groups chose to demonstrate there in response to a temporary memorial titled “Memorial to the Unborn” that the church displayed in honor of National Respect For Life Month. The memorial consisted of small white crosses, each representing the lives of 10 aborted fetuses.
“I was repulsed by the crosses,” said Students for Reproductive Freedom President Courtney Ehrlichman. “We couldn’t just let it go.”
The group gathered at the base of St. Paul’s as Students for Reproductive Freedom and CWO officers spoke about reproductive freedom. According to Mayes, Pennsylvania ranked 48th in a nationwide survey regarding access to information about reproductive rights.
April Murphy, business manager of Students for Reproductive Freedom, spoke about partial birth abortions, a term she said is “made up” by anti-abortionists.
“It’s a giant lie,” Murphy said.
According to Murphy, the term “partial birth abortion” actually refers to third trimester abortions, a procedure that is only performed if either mother or child has a potentially harmful condition.
The speakers were interrupted when a man who identified himself only as “Brother Michael,” approached the group with his views.
“Your bodies belong to God,” he said, in response to the group’s chant of “our bodies, our lives, our right to decide.”
Brother Michael identified himself as a pro-life Christian concerned for the people demonstrating.
“I’ll pray for them,” he said. “I’ll pray for them, but I won’t judge them. I’ll let God judge them.”
The demonstrators responded, yelling, “Get your rosaries out of our ovaries.”
Once again, the left shows their bigotry and selfishness.
Guilty conscience alert!
"The hanger represents the way women induce abortions when they don't have access to adequate health care," said La'Tasha Mayes, legislative director of the Pitt group Students for Reproductive Freedom.
Ask the little dear to tell you how many women were actually dying from illegal abortions in, say, 1966. I bet she can't tell you. Of course one could simply ban metal coat hangers if they are really that dangerous.
"I was repulsed by the crosses," said Students for Reproductive Freedom President Courtney Ehrlichman. "We couldn't just let it go."
And why, exactly, did they repulse her? Does she have something to feel guilty about, maybe?
According to Murphy, the term "partial birth abortion" actually refers to third trimester abortions, a procedure that is only performed if eit her mother or child has a potentially harmful condition.
Correction -- third trimester abortions are performed for all sorts of reasons. The procedure is a certainly harmful procedure for the child (interesting that she should use that word...). I note that they didn't ask her why the AMA said that it is never necessary.
Does anyone have the right to tell you that you can't kill your children?
That's some kind of reasoning, "If you don't let us kill babies with scalpels and hoses we'll just kill them with coat hangers anyway."
The only medical procedure where

Subject: Pro-Life Display Stolen From St. Louis Church

St. Louis, MO -- A display of 180 crosses, meant to memorialize aborted babies, was stolen from the lawn of a Lutheran church in south St. Louis County Sunday night or Monday morning.
St. Louis County police said the crosses were taken from Christ Memorial Lutheran Church, 9712 Tesson Ferry Road in St. Louis.
The 2-foot-tall white plastic crosses represented the number of abortions performed each hour in the United States, said Diane Albers, president of Lutherans for Life Missouri, which owns the display.
"I just couldn't believe it," Albers said. "It's kind of low to steal crosses from a church."
Albers noticed them missing when she drove by the church Monday night. Groundskeepers said the display was gone when they mowed the church lawn that morning. "I assume it is someone who doesn't agree with our stand on abortion," Albers said.
Two signs posted with the display were also taken. They read:
"180 crosses = 180 abortions an hour in the United States" and "In Jesus there is healing and forgiveness."
Lutherans for Life Missouri owns two sets of crosses. Churches across the state borrow the traveling displays for two weeks at a time. Albers and five volunteers set up the display about a week ago. "It took us a couple hours because the ground was so hard," she said.
This is the second set of crosses stolen from the organization since 1996. The other set, which was stolen in rural Missouri several years ago, was never recovered, Albers said.
Police canvassed the area but identified no suspects. The organization may not replace the display, which costs about $600, Albers said.
The Pro-Life Infonet encourages you to consider a donation to help Lutherans for Life of Missouri to replace their cross display. You can send a donation to: Lutherans for Life of Missouri, c/o Diane Albers, President, 9718 Lenor Drive, St. Louis, MO 63123. --
