Pak has to save its nukes to fight India: Minister

SLAMABAD: In a bid to pacify hardliners opposed to Pakistan supporting the US military action in Afghanistan, a senior minister has urged the Islamic clerics to restrain their emotions towards Taliban as Islamabad has to "save its nuclear assets to fight a war against India."

Pakistan has to save its nuclear capability and the atomic bomb for a war against India, Religious Affairs Minister Mehmood Ahmad Ghazi told a gathering of Islamic clerics here on Wednesday.

Addressing a seminar on Pakistan's security and Ulemas role, he said, Islamabad was ready for a war with New Delhi and since it was the first atomic power of the Islamic world, it should not become the victim of farce emotions and sentiments, local Urdu daily Ausaf reported today.

He asked the people to restrain themselves on the Afghan issue as President Pervez Musharraf had taken the right decision in Pakistan's national interest.

While attempting to save Pakistan, Musharraf had opted for a lesser evil. "The bad thing is that our brethren are being killed but, on the other hand, the destruction of Pakistan would be worst and disastrous for the entire Islamic world," he added.

Fair use, for educational purposes.

Nothing new here. Musharraf said basically the same thing a month ago, less directly, when he first began to bow to U.S. pressure. A week of American air strikes would put Pakistan at India's mercy for a generation.

Any nation stupid enough to use nukes in their own back yard deserves to have three eyes and four fingers next generation.

They can probably nuke Calcutta without too much fallout. Of course, losing Calcutta would be more of an emotional loss for India than a real one.

Pakistan would do well to remember an old rule.

Do not pick a fight with a BILLION people armed with nukes.

Not even if some 100 million of them are Muslim (that's the estimate of Muslims still inside India)?

...a senior minister has urged the Islamic clerics to restrain their emotions....

Today, these fanatical "Islamic clerics" are the 2001 version of the early 1930's German National Socialists.

Where are all these Islamic children and these millions of Third World Islamic adults getting their fanatical hatred of America, the West and the moderate leaders in their own countries? Is there a "Hate America" gene somewhere in Islamic Y chromosomes?

No. This cult of hate is being carefully taught by these Islamic clerics.

If the moderate leaders of the Islamic world want to prevent their countries from sinking into 9th Century barbarism, they will have deal with these Islamic clerics just as the Mossad would deal with early 1930's Nazis if they had time machines to travel back in time to 1930's Europe. Twenty thousand rounds of well placed .22 caliber ammunition in the 1930's would have saved tens of millions of lives in Europe in the 1940's.

These vermin need to be put on the endangered species list. It is far easier to eliminate 20,000 fanatical Islamic clerics in 2001 than it will be to eliminate 200 million fanatical terrorists in 2021.

The press is a free for all there. In fact Times of India has had the best coverage of news from that region including Afghanistan.

Gang,

That's ok, I understand your skepticism - that's not a problem. I posted this as a heads-up, just in case. Keep looking for corroborating evidence, it'll be coming up soon enough, piece by piece.

There is a lot of chess-piece moving going on around there right now, and somebody, soon may just decide it's easier to "knock the board over" and start anew...

Yep, just like we're saving our nukes for China. The only difference between the U.S. and Pakistan on this issue is Pakistan has said what everyone else already knows.

I hope you're not describing the good people of Nevada, where above ground nuclear tests occured for almost a decade.

Does anyone think that the recent escalation of rhetoric between India and Pakistan is contrived to distract Islamic fundamentalists from the Afghan bombing and redirect toward a traditional adversary?

I found it very interesting that just about the time those anti-American Pakistani demonstrations were taking hold, up hops the Kashmir situation...

Strategery???

No... but our government probably had the good sense to make sure they wouldn't get too much radiation. Pakistan probably has no such sense. Anyone know which way the winds usually blow over there?

The fear of WMD is totally irrational IMHO. They are actually more humane than the conventional stuff - they kill quickly and relatively painlessly. Can someone explain what is wrong with WMD?

More Indian alarmist journalism... not to mention that while Pakistan does have one or two atomic devices, they have no missle delivery system for nukes whatsoever. Even if Pakistan does want to "save" these for ultimate deployment, realistically, that's more than ten years away at least. Hopefully by then they will have "matured" as a member of the nuclear club.
